WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Basketball legend David Thompson was on the campus of UNCW this morning to raise money for Fathers for Hope and to dunk domestic violence.

The NC State legend and Basketball Hall of Famer shared the story of how his promising basketball career, which made him the highest paid professional athlete in the world at one time, was derailed by drugs and alcohol.

He also spoke about the importance of being a father in today’s world.

“A father is a key figure in the household and is supposed to be the leader, and be the provider, and be the spiritual leader, which I try to be in my family,” Thompson said. “That’s a very important role. A father can shape and mold his family, and as the father goes so goes his family.”

Thompson says he has now been sober for 25 years. He looks forward to becoming a grandfather in the coming months.
