Woman arrested for fatal hit & run

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Wilmington Police have arrested a 23-year-old college student and charged her in connection with the death of a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash Thursday night.

WPD's Traffic Unit arrested Judith Margaret Nemeth Saturday morning and charged her with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Investigators say she was driving the car that hit and and killed Zachary Paul Tyler, 27, Thursday night on Wrightsville Ave. near Lumina Station.

Last night officers found the car they believe was involved in the crash abandoned near the corner of Marsh Hawk Court and Duck Hawk Court in Wilmington after neighbors noticed a car matching the description and called police.

Police say Nemeth was processed into the New Hanover County detention facility under a $25,000 bond. Booking photo is attached.

God bless

God bless both families for what they are facing. It's a horrible accident. I'm sure it could have been avoided somehow. Obviously she made mistakes and both parties are paying horrible prices and one paying the ultimate price. Whatever the truth of the incident is I pray she has the courage and strength to face it. Maybe somehow someway she can have something to offer that will prevent future incidents from happening and will save lives and honor him as best as she can.

1. She will not be eating

1. She will not be eating prison chow...
2. You sound stupid. It was an accident, she got scared, ran, and turned herself in the next morning. She just wanted to see her family first..
3. She got bailed out within 4 hours of being in jail, By her Mommy, so I guess her mommy's money can do her time for her! and she will not be returning to jail.
It sucks that the kid died, but accidents happen.... She's a good person. I have had the pleasure of meeting her, and she's a really nice girl. She regrets what happened more than anything. People get scared, and makes mistakes. She is young, and she didn't know what to do. It's a fact of life. She TURNED herself in the following morning. Stop judging people, and situations you know nothing about.

Hitting the bicyclist was an accident....

...providing she wasn't drinking and only she knows that truth. Leaving the scene of that "accident" to allow that poor man to die in the dirt was an intentional decision, not a mistake! It took her TWO days to turn herslf in. Had to get that blood cleaned out...

Whatever her reason was for leaving the scene, we'll likely never know and only she will have to live with that. She knows exactly what she did and why. If she has a conscience, she'll tell the truth. Otherwise, she has a long, difficult road ahead with a heavy burden to carry!

See Ya Soon...

You made a life changing decision that night, and yes a jury of your peers will hold you accountable.
I hope you enjoy eating prison chow your days of eating chicken mcnuggets and getting to do all the rest of the fun things im certain that this young man that YOU KILLED also enjoyed doing are over just like how you made that choice for this young fella. Sorry Judith mommy can't do the time for ya.

Do you all not have anything

Do you all not have anything better to do other then berate this girl. Jesus. You all have no lives. Why don't you pray for the families of the tragedy instead of talk crap constantly. Everybody judging here needs to take a moment and look at yourselves.

If this is concern for our

If this is concern for our society, then we are certainly doomed.

If you don't like it then

If you don't like it then don't read it. The only thing I'll pray for is this innocent guy the she left to die family and I'll pray that justice will be served. She deserves it. Did you see her car? If she did not realized what happened then she is just plain stupid!!!!!!!

Regarding "Concerned For Our Society"

Easy for you to make that statement. Was it your INOCENT CHILD that was TRAGICLY KILLED as he rode his bike home then left to DIE ALONE?!!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
Judith belongs behind bars not free on bail to possibly KILL again!!!

RIP Zach

I can't believe anyone would actually stick up for that girl. She did a horrible thing, and left my friend in the road to die. Miss ya, buddy.

The truth of the matter is

The truth of the matter is that if you hit something with your car, you stop and see what it is. To think that she hit something that destroyed the front end of the car, breaking the windshield and did not stop to check on what happened is ridiculous. She ran someone over and left them there to die. It sucks for her but, believe me, it sucked a lot worse for Zachary and his family. She needs to face the music and serious jail time for making a very poor decision...

I do not personally know this young lady or young man but I have been praying for her and the victims family. I know that she may have been scared when the accident happened and didn't know what to do, but this is a human that was hit--you don't just drive away! if you are in an area that you are unfamiliar with you should call 911 immediately and tell them what happened, if no cell phone available you should pull into a public place and ask to use their phone and call 911.

State Prison

Judith I wish you the best of luck. If you can't do the time you shouldn't have done the crime. Lots of not so nice people in the big house not to mention that you wont find designer jeans or undergarments as they welcome you home for a while.

I know this young lady

I know this young lady personally, and trust me designer jeans and undergarments are the leat of her worries. You can't possibly come to understand how guilty she feels, as she should. It was an awful thing that happened and she shouldn't have left but she is not heartless, and she will never be the same after this. She made a mistake and will live with the regret and sorrow and guilt she feels everyday from here on out. I pray for her family as I know them very well and also for his, and hope with all that I have that they will find some way to continue without him. People, feel free to voice your opinions but remember that you don't know her, the media gets things wrong and so does she. Leaving was a VERY bad move but she knows that and regrets it more than you can know.

Yes it's something she's

Yes it's something she's going to have to live with, but AT LEAST SHE'S ALIVE. He may have lived had she taken the time consideration and care for another human life to stop her car and call for help. Every action after the accident was of pure selfishness. To be more concerned with her own state, what would happen to HER, is a dispicable trait to possess, especially in regards to human life. I couldn't imagine hitting someone like that, causing that damage, and not stopping my damn car or at least calling 911. Why did she get the option of running for her life, getting her mom, when that poor man didn't. Maybe he was wishing his mom was with him too when he lay there alone probably not even realizing what had happened. May she get what she deserves. Be it through the courts, or tortured by her own selfish ways.

She is a great girl, always has been... She made a terrible mistake. I cry for the loss of his life and that she left the scene but that does not make her some satanic creature. She will live with this forever, whether she's behind bars or not.

She showed a wanton

She showed a wanton disregard for human life. Hitting him may have been a mistake, but leaving him to die like a dog in the street was a choice. So what if she has to live with this the rest of her life, she gets to live. That is more than Zachary gets.

Tell us, please!

Tell us, please, the name of the downtown bar she had just left.

assuming the worst

She had just left work.

Doesn't she work at a bar?

Doesn't she work at a bar?

Yeah, all people who work at

Yeah, all people who work at bars and restaurants must be drunk on the job. Wow. The level of ignorance demonstrated in these assumptive, closed-minded, and judgmental comments is shocking. What no one realizes is this girl will punish herself way more than you or the family-or even the courts. Good people make horrible mistakes when they are in shock. My heart goes out to both families and the girl. She's a young, impulsive human being who is probably feeling so guilty and distraught. This does not mean I don't care and empathize with the young man's family and unspeakable loss.

Well, excuse me

She had just left work? Then she must have been chatting on her cell phone or c h a t t i n g.

Stop spreading rumors

Do not throw stones unless you have not sinned. And I highly doubt you are perfect, because you are currently spreading lies.

I have never seen so many

I have never seen so many people that are willing to come to the defense of someone who will hit someone with car, leave them in the road to die, hide the car they were driving and finally after 2 or 3 days decide to turn themselves in at the police station and walk on a 25K bond, what a joke!! There's more to this story than most of us will ever find out about but you can bet the reason she drove off and left this poor guy to die is more than she was just scared. Folks that's about as low as it gets....and some of the commenters on here try justify hitting a pedestrian or a cyclist and leaving them to die in the road if you're scared.

Does anyone stop to think

Does anyone stop to think that this girl may have not known she hit a person. Her windshield was shattered. She could of thought she hit a deer. She let the police know the very next day she was going to turn herself in. She was just waiting for her mom. She's so young and scared. My heart goes out to the young man and his family. Maybe the mother is being so compassionate because she understands it was an accident. The bike lane had ended at the place it occurred. The city needs to take some responsibility for the lack of safe bike lanes in this town.

As a driver, it is her

As a driver, it is her responsibility to know what her driving lane is and she is responsible for watching out for everything else on the road. Regardless of how the accident happened, she, not the city, chose to leave the scene. She chose to cover her backside instead of looking to see what she hit. She chose to ignore what she hit, knowing that it could have been a human being. She is in the position she is in because of the choices she made. Zachary is in the morgue because of the decisions that she made.

Look, everyone here would be

Look, everyone here would be scared if they hit something at night that did a lot of damage to the car, but that is no excuse to leave the scene knowing it could have been a person. Bike lane or no bike lane, you must yield to the one not surrounded by 1.5 tons of metal. It doesn't matter whose fault the accident was now that she ran. She assumed all responsibility when she decided to leave him there. I'm sure she was a great person but I hope she gets punished severely for killing that man.
Look at it this way: A 23 year old UNCW student runs over and kills a young woman riding home from work. He left the her there at the scene and ditched the car because he was scared. Two days later, his parents and an attorney call the police department to negotiate his surrender and he is later released on $25,000 bond. Would you feel the same for a man that committed the same crime? Would you have sympathy for him because he was so young and scared and thought he might of hit a deer?

not surprised at all

Look around at the popular culture. Look at the way people dress. Hear the "music" they listen to (yes, I know that baby boomers' parents didn't like much of ours either), look at schools and the lack of good education to the expense of teaching "diversity" and man-made global warning, look at the idiots in charge who expel little boys for having toy guns....the whole culture is rotten to the core. There are millions of low-info voters who vote for candidates who promise them free stuff, who care more about sleazy personalities like the Karwhatevers. So I am not surprised ONE BIT.

Haha, are you some sort of

Haha, are you some sort of ultra-religious survivalist? THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING. you should think about leaving your house every so often, maybe talk to real people instead of posting on here.

hit & Run

Judith all you had to do was STOP, pull yourself together and breath..... when you recognized you had hit this 27 yr old biker. you could have Called for help and stay there comforting this young man till help came. YOU could have helped him instead of leaving him lying there alone to die while you ran and hid!
If you had stooped and helped you wouldn't be in the trouble you are in now. Now your life may very well be ovr also. What for?
Come on people. You have a horrible accident where someone is near death PLEASE stop---try to at the least be with them, comfort them in some way till help arrives. everyone would have been better off for it

I Hate When People Assume

People saying she must have been drinking or texting while driving. People saying this stuff like they were there when they weren't. People spreading rumors and innuendo without a shred of evidence like a police report are more dangerous than the hit and run driver.

There are several posts here that say she was driving home from work. While that too is speculative, all speculation other than speculation based on published facts is really not warranted. What she did, if true, is horrible, but it isn't really fair to toss biases on a already horrible situation. After all, her life is over just as much as the victim. T
