WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Day one of the Fred Lynch Invitational is complete. Fred Lynch was the head basketball coach at Laney High School for 26 years compiling over 400 wins. Lynch no longer coaches, but he serves as the school's athletic director. Nathan Faulk is now the Laney boys head basketball coach. In the summer of 2012 Faulk started the Fred Lynch Invitational to honor Lynch for all the service provided to Laney.

The 2nd Annual Fred Lynch Invitational is being held from June 17-19 at four different venues in New Hanover County: Laney High, Holley Shelter Middle, Trask Middle and Northside Baptist Church. The tournament featured 18 high school teams in 2012. 45 teams will be competing in 2013.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Catawba Valley Stars came away with a 5-0 victory over the Wilmington Sharks in an exhibition game on Monday night.

Catawba Valley tallied up 10 hits in the ball game and started things off early in the first when Matt De La Rosa reached safely on a double down the left field line and eventually scored to give CV the 1-0 lead. The Stars picked up a run in the second inning and three more runs in the seventh and ninth inning to come away with a 5-0 win.

The Wilmington Sharks tallied six hits in the game and had runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth but were unable to score any runs. The Sharks pitchers did a good job on the hill as they picked up a combined eight strike outs during the contest.

The Sharks welcome the Martinsville Mustangs to town on Tuesday night as the contest is slated for 7:05 p.m.

I have attended games during this tournament and have been shocked by the conduct of coach faulk. It already shows what kind of influence he is having on his players and their disrespect of officials who are calling games. Who does he think he is? This just shows what a joke it was to hire him. It was really a lynch move in this hiring. They would have been better off hiring BOZO the clown because that what faulk is. it will show when league play starts and laney will be the same lynch team as in years past. Tariq Lane needs to grow up and stop thinking he is next MJ. Laney athletics is in a sad stae that is why kids transfer to NH, Hoggard. faulk needs to realize how bad he looks to the public with arrogant attitude. Faulk is a joke!!!!!!
