WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A raccoon from New Hanover County has tested positive for rabies. It’s the fifth confirmed case of rabies in the county this year.

Friday Animal Services was called to Greenville Ave. to pick up a raccoon that had fought with a family pet. The owner handled the dog after the fight, which resulted in potential exposure. The raccoon was brought to the shelter, where it was euthanized and sent to the state lab for testing. The pet was current with its rabies vaccine.

Yesterday the State Lab notified ASU that the raccoon had tested positive for rabies. The victim was notified of the positive results. ASU will confirm that the dog received a rabies booster, and ASU will canvass the area to educate the public about the importance of keeping their pet’s rabies vaccine current.
