Pender High student charged with statutory rape on campus

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Deputies in Pender County have charged a 19-year-old with raping a fellow student at Pender High School on the last day of school earlier this month, WWAY has learned.

A school district spokeswoman said "an alleged incident" happened at the school, but she would confirm if it was a rape allegation.

Pender County Sheriff's detective Sgt. John Leatherwood told WWAY this afternoon he was not prepared to release information about the investigation. Hours later, though, Leatherwood told our partners at the StarNews that Sam Clark Sanchez, 19, of Ivanhoe is charged with one count of statutory rape.

The newspaper reports deputies arrested Sanchez June 7, the same day the alleged rape occurred. He was jailed in Pender County in lieu of $75,000 bond.

Sgt. Leatherwood told the StarNews that investigators believe the rape happened during school hours and on school grounds, where both the suspect and alleged victim attended classes.

Did it happen on school campus

Isn't 19 a bit old to still be in high school?

Was the BEST 4 years of his life..............

..the hardest 3 years of his life!

If he is found guilty he may not get much of a sentence. At 19 he may not have much of a record. If he does go to prison, let's hope he gets the honeymoon suite with "Bubba" and learns if he can take it as well as he dishes it out.
