WILMINGTON, NC (SHARKS) — The US Collegiate National Team beat the Wilmington Sharks 7-3 in six innings on Thursday night in a game shortened by rain.

Team USA took a early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Brad Zimmer hit a two run home run with two outs to keep the inning alive and gave Team USA a 2-0 lead. Matt Chapman hit a RBI single in the same inning to give them a 3-0 advantage.

Team USA struck again in the fourth inning scoring four runs as CJ Hinojosa started things off with a RBI double. Kyle Schwarber picked up a two RBI double to give Team USA a 6-0 lead and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alex Bregman scored Schwarber to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Sharks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a Leighton Daniels RBI single. In the same inning the Sharks picked up two more runs on three hits to cut the lead down to 7-3.

The rain came in the top of the seventh inning and the game was eventually called as the game came final after six innings to give Team USA a 7-3 victory.

The Sharks go on the road on Friday night to take on High-Point Thomasville in their first matchup of the season with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — We’ve been told there will be an official announcement on Friday morning in regard to the football head coaching position at Topsail High School. Unofficially Topsail has appointed Wayne Inman as their head football coach. Inman has been the head coach at Terry Sanford High in Fayetteville the past nine years.

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) – The Charlotte Bobcats have selected Indiana center Cody Zeller with the No. 4 pick in the NBA draft.

Bobcats general manager Rich Cho said earlier in the week the Bobcats needed a big man and the 7-foot, 240-pound Zeller should provide help on the boards.

Zeller averaged 16.5 points and 8.1 rebounds last season as a sophomore for the Hoosiers. He finished as Indiana’s career record holder in field goal percentage, shooting 59.1 percent from the floor.

Two Hoosiers were picked in the top four in the draft. Victor Oladipo was selected second overall by Orlando.

Charlotte is 28-120 over the past two seasons and has never won a playoff game.

The Bobcats chose Zeller over two other available centers – Kentucky’s Nerlens Noel and Maryland’s Alex Len.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Cleveland Cavaliers have selected UNLV freshman Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 pick, a surprising start to the NBA draft.

The Cavaliers passed on big men Nerlens Noel and Alex Len in favor of the forward who has starred for Canada’s junior national teams and was the Mountain West Conference player of the year.

There was drama right until the end Thursday, either because the Cavs were unsure who they wanted or were trying to trade the pick.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW’s Keith Rendleman watched the NBA Draft, but Rendleman was not selected.
