WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A woman is in custody and a man is in the hospital after an argument between neighbors turned violent at the 2300 block of Boardwalk Avenue Saturday night.

Neighbors say they say they cannot believe that something like this happened in their cul-de-sac, but are relieved that the situation did not turn deadly.

John Freifeld was in his house when he heard strange noises outside his door.

“I heard some yelling, and it was like one or two people,” he said. “And then it became three or four people, and then it sounded like they were having a riot out here in the cul-de-sac.”

That’s when he decided to step outside, and see what the commotion was all about. But when he opened his door, he was met by the sounds of gunshots.

Police say 22-year-old Rebecca Harley Lawrence was in an argument with neighbors about a dog when she grabbed a 22-caliber rifle and shot at a crowd of neighbors that had formed to watch the argument.

“And the next thing I know I’m hearing a man yell, ‘I’ve been shot! I’ve been shot,'” he added.

It was his 32-year-old neighbor who was shot in the abdomen. The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for what officials say are not life-threatening injuries.

A neighbor we spoke with said the victim was shot through the liver and the bullet is lodged in his back. She says he is in stable condition but still in the ICU.

Lawrence has been charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of city ordinance.

She is being held at the New Hanover County Jail on a $300,000 bond.

How is it not attempted murder when you shoot some one in the chest with a gun!

  • guesty says:

The female lieutenant in hiring/training fired her duty weapon while on duty at another on duty female officer in the WPD parking lot in the early 90’s and she wasn’t charged at all. Her skin color has allowed her to get away with attempted murder.

He was hit in the abdomen by a ricochet bullet. She is bipolar. She did not mean shoot anyone. She just wanted them to leave her alone and was trying to scare them. I have great empathy for her family and loved ones.

  • anne says:

What? “bngltgr” – and that gives her an excuse to start firing a weapon. Please – stupidity reigns. Good thing no one was hurt seriously. What idiots!

  • tke1 says:

If she is bipolar, she has no business with a firearm, PERIOD.
Any time you discharge a firearm, other than a controlled range situation, you should assume that someone is going to get hurt—-That bullet has to go somewhere. Even law enforcement use of force policies normally prohibit the firing of “warning shots”. Leave the “warning shots” to the idiots in Hollywood.

Do you hear yourself!? She obviously isnt in her right state of mind. Or able to make rational decisions. She apparently has underlying issues. What person in their right mind would fire any weapon at, or in the direction of, another human being.. ever?? Unless trying to do harm? None.
I do know for a fact that altho she did have access to the weapon, it was NOT hers, PERIOD.. You should probably be aware that there are MANY Bipolar (diagnosed and otherwise)individuals who not only have access to but OWN their own guns.. and they do just fine. Very nice of you to discriminate tho, Im sure they are used to it

I know both the man that was shot and the woman that did the shooting. I feel for both of these people’s families. It is sad when something so stupid gets taken to such an extreme. The bullet went through the man’s liver and lounged in his back, which will likely affect his ability to work as a roofer for a good while, and by which he supports his wife. The woman is likely going to end up in prison for a while (years), and I personally know her family has done all it can to help and encourage her to stay on her meds for severe bipolar disorder. It’s just sad.

Google this phrase and then come back and point out where I lied. “Wilmington Police Probe Officers’ Affair, Allegations Of Vandalism” and click the link for the Star News. I’m not employed by Wilmington nor have I ever been employed by Wilmington.

If you are part of the “truth squad” at WPD, that shows one of the biggest problems. People like you that won’t stand up and open your eyes.

  • WPD Truth Squad says:

To Guesty: You must be awful miserable. I bet you can’t sleep at night because your deep seated hateful disposition is tearing you up inside. You are one deceitful low down human being who is focused on blaming others for your own short comings and failures. You are one of those disgruntled employees who goes to bed angry, tosses and turns all night and then gets up the next day focused on telling more lies to fit the circumstances that you have twisted. You have absolutely no credibility and you are a disgrace and discredit to the Wilmington Police Department, to your co-workers and to the fine citizens of the Wilmington community.. Get a life..
