WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The sheriff’s deputies involved in a shooting at a DWI checkpoint in Leland last month are back on the job.

While the SBI is still investigating what happened June 14, both the New Hanover County and Brunswick County sheriff’s offices completed internal investigations that cleared the officers last week.

Four deputies from Brunswick County were assigned to administrative duties, while the three officers from New Hanover County were on administrative leave during the internal investigations.

“We’ve been real careful in talking and working together in making sure that our officers get through this ok and get back to work and continue to do the good job that they do for us,” New Hanover County Sheriff’s Ed McMahon said.

Leland Town Manager David Hollis said the Leland Police officer involved in the shooting is still on administrative leave.

Sheriff McMahon said this is the first time he has seen an incident like this with multiple officers from different agencies.

It’s a good thing we have two good sheriffs, who stand behind their men. The bad news is, nothing is going to happen to the two thugs, who nearly killed these cops.

Were u there when it happened to kno what really happened?? No u were not and who are you to judge them two suspects by callin them thugs? Are you God to judge them and call them out their names?? No you are not so therefore you can stop judging and the sheriffs are just ask crooked as you.

They are two bad dudes. Their records justify that label. I am still not convinced about the shooting though. Were they trying to get away or actually trying to run the officers over? What was actually thrown from the window of the vehicle? Why were they shot at again if the vehicle was stopped and no other weapon at that point. Hopefully SBI report will shed some light. Not good for community if the two departments do their own investigation. Any video available??

The bad guys here are the 7 armed thugs that fired into a moving vehicle, not knowing what might happen, or who they might accidentally hit. Bad, very bad decisions.

Every 10 years or so it seems that this “run over the law man with the vehicle” thing comes around. It takes a few people getting shot for the remaining thugs and thugets to understand that a vehicle while moving is considered a deadly weapon, and as such a person, law enforcement or non-law enforcement has the right to use deadly force to protect themselves.
Perhaps setting the roadblock up differently to allow speeding vehicles a path through and then giving chase is a better way of conducting a DUI check point.
I go through these check points on a regular basis as a resident of Brunswick county and a conceal carry permit holder, I have to present my DL and CCW permit at the time I stop. I have always been treated professionally and civilly by the deputies.
I support my Brunswick county Sheriff and his deputies and the NH county sheriff and his deputies. Keep up the good work.

I would love to defend these guys. All I need to see is one bullet that went through the door and I will prove my case that these officers fired at random and were not in fear of their life. I investigated shootings on many crime scenes and I hope all the officers rounds went straight through the front windshield. Once the car passes you it no longer is a threat and there is no need to fire at the moving car. I hope these two defendents have good lawyers and investigators who can check this.I have been through hundreds of DWI check points in this state and have never seen 8 officers standing together in the middle of the road, its hard to believe this happened.
Its amazing how they were quickly cleared by their departments. This state must have different rules on the use of deadly force.
God save us all. I hope the SBI sees through this cover up.

Plenty of non-LE witnesses. They threw items out the windows on the way to the checkpoint. They tried to kill the people working the checkpoint. They put the other people waiting to go through the checkpoint in danger from both their reckless driving, and the actions LE had to take to bring it to an end.

I would have thought that .40 cal would have been more effective, but maybe none of the LE present wanted that on their conscience, so they use the minimum dose of PB necessary. Thug #1 got out and gave up. Thug #2 got out after his driving and vehicle failed him. The thug that was in the hospital longest even assaulted one of his caregivers.

So, there are enough accounts of WHAT THEY DID that it really isn’t necessary to even use the term “allegedly” in the case of these thugs.

Unless you have some proof of corruption that you should make public, you need to take your own advice about judging people.

Sheriff Ingram’s record speaks for itself, can you say the same about the thugs that were involved in the shootout? I think not!!! How can you say he just as crooked as they are. His every move is watched like he is under a microscope. You think every time he runs for office his opponents are all up in his business checking him and his record out. I know very little about any of the officers involved, but don’t like seeing innocent people run through the mud why people like you are trying to protect thugs out there running the streets up to know good. If they were not up to no good why didn’t they stop at the check point like everyone else did?

How do you know he/she was not there? PublicAvenger might work in law enforcement or might have been in one of the cars at the check point. Who are you to judge how crooked he/she is? Gotta hate it when your table is turned.

I’ll judge that the 4th grade were the three most difficult years of your life.

clearly you have no sense of respect for the men and women that risk their lives to protect you everyday. A round in the door of the vehicle could be from an officer firing to protect his fellow officer that is about to be run down by two punk ni**ers! clearly they are nothing but a couple of useless thugs based on what they did and have done. The only problem that I see is that the officers did not eliminate those two scum with a round in the temple instead they will just get out one day and be right back to their ni**er ways….thank you to the officers that risk their safety to protect us from those low lifes keep up the good work!

Sad state of affairs…..of course we the taxpayers will foot the bill for their PUBLIC DEFENDERS….and of course paying that bill to house and feed them!

Interesting how Highway Patrol just had the same thing happen but they were smart enough to pursue the people by vehicle instead of being like the corrupted Brunswick and New Hanover County divisions shooting up the town.

Maybe these young men will learn something from this incidence.Do the wrong things, hang with the wrong people and in the wrong places and this is what may happen. The driver of that car took it upon himself to charge at LEO’s in an attempt to flee a traffic stop. Would it have really been THAT bad to have been stopped, even with drugs? It’s a slap on the wrist in court these days and they know that. Better to have stopped than to end up with gun shot wounds and all of the charges they now have. Lesson learned.

Great gob LEO’s!
