WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have charged a man with a hit and run crash that killed a moped driver Saturday.

Freddie Lee Riley, 48, is charged with felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by vehicle. He is in jail under $25,000 secure bond.

Police say around 1 p.m. Saturday they responded to the intersection of Greenfield and S. 15th Street after the car Riley was alledgely driving hit a moped and then left the scene. Bryan Orlando Copeland, 22, died from his injuries from the crash.

Officers on the scene say it was the help of several eye-witnesses to the accident that helped police investigatiors locate Copeland.

“We appreciate the quick response of the community to help officers locate the suspect. Residents were key in helping us to do our job,” Capt. Jim Varrone said.
