Rain putting damper on beach vacations

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- The rain continues to pour, and tourists are not happy about it getting in the way of their 4th of July vacations.

"I don't think we've been to the beach and had this much rain before, so it's a little disappointing," Bob Griggs said while visiting Southport.

Griggs traveled all the way from Kentucky to enjoy a nice 4th of July vacation at the beach, but he and his family were met by rain, rain and more rain.

“We would like to spend more time on the beach, and we planned to go jet skiing,” Griggs said.

He's not the only one who had dreams of lying on the beach.

“Well, we were hoping to go out on the beach,” Jonathan Piland said. “But it's been a little rainy and thunderstorms.”

Jonathan Piland and his family wanted to spend their days having some fun in the sun, but when the dark clouds rolled in, their plans changed.

“Well, I sort of like wanted to go to the beach,” Jonathan’s little sister said. “But we were thinking about just walking on the beach.”

Even locals have had their plans washed out.

“It's been awful,” Clint Westwood, an Oak Island local said. “I got off work in two jobs to play volleyball, and it was cancelled this morning.”

That is not the only cancellation tourists have been seeing.

Beach day festivities Monday in Oak Island took a hit too.

The town had to cancel some of its activities, and fireworks planned for Monday night have been cancelled as well.

Now tourists are looking for different things to do during their vacation.

“Right now, I'm just sitting here and watching the boats, and waiting for it to stop raining,” Jonathan added.
