WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — All the rain lately means more mosquitoes.

New Hanover County Senior Environmental Health Program Specialist David Jenkins says the more rain we get, the more flooding we get, which causes more eggs to hatch. That, of course, means more mosquitoes that want to take a bite out of you.

That’s bad news for anyone who likes to lounge outside.

“These mosquitoes can carry virus,” Jenkins said. “We try to monitor for virus with our sentinel (chicken) flock that we have in the county, and alert our public if we do determine there is a virus.”

He says the unusually wet weather has kept the county from spraying to control the mosquito population, but he hopes the weather will clear up so they can take care of these pesky pests.
