BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Flooding in southeastern Brunswick County has already forced three families from their homes.
Brunswick County Emergency Management Director Anthony Marzano says emergency vehicles cannot reach the affected area if they’re needed.
Israel Bitton says after several days of flooding and the several inches of rain, the road near his home collapsed and the floodwaters began to rise.
“The fire trucks and the ambulances have come by and said that if anything happened, there wasn’t much they could do. The only thing we could do is to evacuate,” said Bitton.
Marzano says there was a plan to open an American Red Cross Emergency Shelter, but people living in the flooded area did not want to evacuate.
“We really can’t leave the neighborhood. We have to figure out a way to get this road fixed,” said Bitton.
Neighbors say they will continue to stick together and help those living in their small community.
