WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You might say it was a violation of church and state.
Wrightsboro United Methodist Church prides itself on being very patriotic, but thieves targeted its annual display of dozens of American flags.
Thursday members of Wrightsboro UMC put up 56 flags to honor the men and women who have served from this church. Yesterday morning seven of those flags were gone.
Rev. Jerry Jackson says he does not understand why anybody would take the flags, but he hopes they are using them for something positive.
He says this is a tradition his church began last year. He says they leave the flags flying for at least a week as a symbolic act of celebrating our nation’s liberties and freedoms.
“We are a very patriotic church,” Rev. Jackson said. “We are a church that appreciates those that have served our country and we are also a church that even in our musical program we try to celebrate america and what it stands for.”
Members of the church have replaced the seven stolen flags and say they will continue to leave the flags out throughout the holiday weekend.
We reached out to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to see if it had any leads on this case, but we have not gotten a call back yet.
