WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The filing period for municipal elections opens Friday, but there is already one hopeful announcing his candidacy for Wilmington City Council.

Skip Watkins says he’ll be at the Board of Elections when the filing period opens at noon Friday to make his run for office official.

“All my adult life I’ve always wanted to serve. I really have,” Watkins said.

Watkins, who works as a financial advisor, has served on the board of the Cape Fear Fair and Expo for 24 years and as fair manager for 16. He says he and his wife Valerie have also co-chaired the Azalea Festival Circus Committee for the last several years. He says all that experience makes him a good candidate for council.

“I know how to squeeze a dollar,” Watkins said. “I know how to make a budget work. That and the fiscal responsibility I try to teach my clients, I want to bring that to council.”

In addition to bringing what he calls “sound fiscal guidance” to council, Watkins says he has ideas about addressing crime in the Port City and making sure council focuses on the entire city and not just particular areas.

Watkins is the first candidate to publicly announce a run for Wilmington City Council.

Last month Bill Saffo announced he will run for another term as mayor.

The filing period runs until July 19 at noon.
