WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Wilmington teen is getting ready for a big trip to the nation's capital in July. But, he's not going just to see all the sights and history there.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is hosting Children's Congress 2013 on Capitol Hill on July 10. Carr Bender will be among five children representing North Carolina as a delegate. He'll go to rallies and hearings to garner awareness and support for Type 1 Diabetes.

Carr said he's eager to join 150 children from across the country, and is excited to have the chance to meet both Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) and Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC).

According to their website, "JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic plan to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people's lives until it is no longer a threat to anyone."
