WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — An era ends Saturday night, both at the StarNews and in Southeastern North Carolina sports.

Sportswriter Chuck Carree will head off to cover a Wilmington Hammerheads soccer game at Legion Stadium. He’ll file his story, probably well ahead of deadline as usual.

At that will be it – after 35 years of covering athletics along the Lower Cape Fear.

Carree is retiring officially on Saturday. He’ll still step in to cover the occasional game as a correspondent, according to sports editor Dan Spears. The Hammerheads game, however, will cap a full-time sports writing career that began on Groundhog Day 1978 – enough time for Carree to have covered both fathers and sons on the field.

I will really miss your articles and coverage of local sports. You are one of a kind my friend and I wish you the best. May God bless you! Now I know I am not paying to subscribe online!

As a friend of chuck for the last 20 yrs. I think that he has been “eased on outta here” It has been obvious since the paper was bought a while back that his job was being phased out. What a shame, probably not too many around with his knowledge of local/state athletics. Good luck chuck

While he does not know me by name,,He would recognize me from our frequent encounters at ballgames at Brook’s Field or even in Coach Scalf’s office or wherever. Always cordial, and a friend to the athletes, coaches and fans. I hope He will continue to submit a few stories and insight Also, I hope retirement does him well. I put Chuck right there with RG Powell.. I hope I have spelled the names correctly
