Woman bitten by shark is doing well, wants to get back in the water

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A woman attacked by a shark Thursday is doing pretty well at the Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Friday night.

63-year-old Barbara Corey of Supply has surfed waters around the world for 50 years, but it wasn't until Thursday afternoon that she came face-to-face with a shark.

"I've surfed in Chile, Nicaragua, Costa Rica about 5 times," said Corey.

The shark bit Corey when she was giving a surfing lesson near Holden Beach. She said the water was murky, and the shark didn't know what it was biting.

"The shark was in there feeding," said Corey. "He thought my foot was a fish, and he was wrong."

The shark took a bite out of Corey's right foot, tearing into her Achilles tendon and puncturing her flesh.

"It was really painful, very painful," said Corey. "It was like somebody had clamped my ankle in a vise grip, and was tightening the screws. Then it started thrashing around. My foot is being thrashed around and I am kicking and kicking."

Rescuers took Corey to hospital, where she is recovering now. She says she is happy the young girl she was teaching made it to shore safely.

When asked if she will continue surfing, Corey said "Oh, hell yeah. I'm not giving it up. After 50 years, why stop now?"

Doctors say Corey won't be able to put weight on her foot for another 6 weeks. She will need to wear a cast for at least a month.

Get well soon Barbara Corey

You epitomize the spirit of the beach.

Surfing with sharks!

I love Barbara Corey's attitude! I am 60 and I surf. We know the risk and the enjoyment. Percentage wise the risk are tiny so she is not going to let fear attack her love of the sport and enjoyment of life. .

Well bless her heart! She must be in great shape. Reminds me to wear my sunscreen.

Barbara Corey / North Carolina Shark Attack

North Carolina Surfer BARBARA COREY attacked by shark in North Carolina

As a longtime friend of Barbara Corey we pray that she has a full and speedy recovery.

The last time I personally spent time with her was when the two of us caught a hurricane swell alone in Rodanthe, North Carolina and,as always, she was smiling and laughing as she would drop in and ride the sizable waves.

She is one of the nicest and friendliest people that I have ever met.

I hope I'm there to share some waves with her when she paddles back out.

May God Bless You Barbara,
