NEWLAND, N.C. (AP) – A mudslide in Avery County has wiped out 200 feet of a state highway and destroyed two mobile homes and several cars.
The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed N.C. 194 near Newland after the mudslide Monday night took out all three lanes of the road. The mudslide off the shoulder of the road wore away at the foundation and caused it to sink. Wet conditions were to blame for the slide.
Initial reports indicate there were no injuries. In addition to the two homes lost, one family was displaced from its home because of the mudslide.
A statement from NCDOT said crews are currently evaluating the situation to determine the extent of the repairs that are needed to rebuild the road and the slope.
