WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Bikers from near and far put the pedal to the metal for BMX bike day at Greenfield Grind Skate Park in Wilmington this weekend.

The goal was to promote the changing city rules to allow bikers to use skate parks. Currently only skateboards and rollerblades are allowed access to the skate park. Bikers say the sport keeps them happy and healthy, and should be considered.

“Being able to travel around and meet new people and go to new places. This is my first time in this wonderful city and I am loving it,” said extreme biker Brad Secor. “It’s an all around awesome sport. It keeps me healthy, keeps me doing good in life. It gives me something to wake up for, I guess.”

This BMX bike day was the first in the ten years the facility has been open. Bikers around Wilmington hope to convince lawmakers to switch gears soon.

I just want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting BMX Bike Days at Greenfield Grind Skatepark. All the BMX Bike riders in and around the Wilmington area want to thank Dave Pugh and Wilmington’s Parks and Recreation Division for allowing us to put on this event. We hope that we can be allowed access to the skate park a few days out of the week so we have a safe and beneficial facility to practice the sport of BMX Bike riding.

    Best Regards,

    The Wilmington BMX Bike Community

  • Hi Christina. I wanted to update you on this story about the City of Wilmington allowing BMX Bikes to access the Greenfield Grind Skate park.

After 12 years since the skate park has been built for the Wilmington community, BMX Bikes will be allowed to access this facility starting May 11th 2014. BMX Bikes will have their own BMX Bike Day on Sundays where BMX Bikes only will be allowed to access the skate park from 1pm to 8pm.

This is a direct result from the BMX Bike Day I organized on July 20th 2013. I would like to thank the Wilmington Parks and Recreation Department for giving the BMX biker community the opportunity to utilize this facility. I also want to thank Jim and Nick at TwoWheelerDealer, Medac, and Eastern Bikes for helping support this event. It took a team effort to get this done, but we can FINALLY say that BMX bikes can enjoy the Greenfield Grind Skate Park.
