Doctor joins WPD SWAT team

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A local physician recently graduated from CFCC's basic law enforcement training program.

Dr. Jim Joachim has been sworn in as an auxiliary police officer with the Wilmington Police Department. He has been assigned as the tactical physician with the SWAT team.

Joachim says he hopes to combine his 26 years of experience practicing medicine with his new work in law enforcement.

"I hope to bring a higher element of safety and security to the citizens of Wilmington," he said. "I also hope to enhance to Wilmington Police Department's service to this community."

Joachim attended evening classes four days a week for the past eight months.

He says as part of the SWAT team he will be in charge of tactical medicine decisions with paramedics on scene and immediate medical care to officers.
