Shanahan resigns as Public Safety Secretary

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina's secretary of the department of Public Safety is resigning, after six months on the job.

Gov. Pat McCrory announced Friday that Kieran Shanahan will step down at the end of the month.

McCrory says Shanahan wants to focus on his law firm, other business obligations and to support his wife, who has been promoted from captain to admiral in the US Naval Reserve.

Shanahan took the job when McCrory took office in January. Shanahan took a leave of office from his law practice in May, after being questioned about a potential conflict of interest.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Shanahan had continued to provide legal advice to private clients after McCrory named him to oversee the Highway Patrol, state prison system and other law enforcement agencies.

What???

“Shanahan took the job when McCrory took office in January. Shanahan took a leave of office from his law practice in May, after being questioned about a potential conflict of interest.

So – Smirkey gets a pass on this because Shanahan resigned?
Smiley would have been crucified here. This guy did it for 5 full months !!!! Ethics are involved here, and the lack thereof. This is far far worse than Susi Hamilton’s crap – this guy was providing legal advice to clients who may or may not have dealings with the SHP, state prison and other law enforcement agencies.

This guy’s a piece of crap and the people who talk to these legislators about ethics (including Hamilton) should be fired. McCrory should be investigated for ethics violations as well as it should have been a precursor to taking this job that he resign from the law firm – so McCrory’s team was also at fault.

Gov Liar, Smirkey, or crony should be held accountable.

the rest of the story. No one in State Government knew he was doing it. If I read the N&O article correctly, a lot of this was being done through his wife.

That said, as soon as it became known to the Governor, he had a choice. He chose the easy way out.
