WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Scientists say rising temperatures worldwide could soon lead to rising tides in and around the Port City.

Residents are concerned and so are scientists. They say it could happen as early as 2030.

Researchers say if global warming continues at its current rate through the year 2100, at least 1,100 hundred cities and towns, including Wilmington will most likely be under water at high tide.

“The prospect is scary, but it’s still a wonderful place to live,” said Owen Wexler.

Wexler and his family have always lived near the coast. He says he isn’t surprised by the recent study by The National Academy of Sciences.

“I believe it is rising. I don’t believe it’s going to impact me enough, but it will impact maybe my children and my grandchildren in a very negative way,” said Wexler.

Wexler’s granddaughter is a recent UNCW graduate. She says the issue of global warming is something people of all ages should be concerned about.

“It’s kind of hard to debate it. I don’t really understand people who say they just don’t believe in global warming. Science isn’t something that you believe. It’s something that you prove or disprove,” said Jeffrianne Gutsin.

The National Academy of Sciences say prior carbon emissions have already locked in four feet of future sea level rise.

The study based its findings off of sea level rise for each degree rise in global temperature.

If the computer models are correct, the Wilmington riverfront could be underwater as soon as 2030.

has ALL happened in the past…only difference is humans are here to go chicken little about it…

“Scientists say” the earth is getting hotter, because their govt grants depend on towing the liberal party line. Meanwhile, record snow last winter and extended cold through this spring and summer was conveniently ignored. But we must listen to some pointy headed liberals in their ivory towers tell us our SUV is to blame for the weather, even though mankind doesn’t even have decent data beyond 100 years or so on a planet that is estimated to be 5 billion years old.

What happened to the “ice age” that “scientists said” would befall us in the 1970s?

Earth’s equilibrium:

heat increases evaporation, condensation, then attracted to pressure differentials…..explaining the increased snowfall

On another note: Hurricanes are Earth’s way of maintaining equilibrium……cooling the oceans

Ofcourse its not global warming:

Thankfully we have scientific leaders such as Dr. Larry Cahoon at UNCW who faithfully serve the public.

I would love to see WWAYTV3 pursue an update from Dr. Cahoon on this subject:

But while traveling they at least get per diem.

Actually this is what he ball park was for. To act as a buffer.

Logic would dictate that to be true…but logic and City Council travel in opposite directions.

By the time 2030 rolls around…City Council will have created a Ghost Town here anyway (not the one in Maggie Valley either) because of the infrastructure failure…and Saffo will still be at the helm with a grey haired Doo!
I read this article, and compared it to the 1/1/00 (double zero’s/computer clock failures!) and the 12/21/12 crisis with all Hell breaking out with the World’s end. Someone is watching too much TV… Mamaluke!
My suggestion is for the contractors to start building “Now” on the beaches, so they can hurry up and make their Big Bux…like St. James Plantation does with a home sale every 28 seconds…or minutes…or days (whatever). The downside is…when a surfer comes barrelling into their bedroom window at 9:00 AM…then they will **Sell** their home within the “#28 Time Frame Clause” :-)
In other news…the city of Manhattan is good to go with all of these predictions, as long as the ocean levels don’t reach 1000′ (+)

Last year, the General Assembly passed a law saying that scientific evidence of rising sea levels wasn’t allowed to exist, so just don’t believe it and trust your GOP government.

They’ve done a great job so far, right?

“They’ve done a great job so far, right?”

Yep…they have.

…that’s right, Guestmarvin. Also, fracking will not disturb anything, either!!

“If the computer models are correct, the Wilmington riverfront could be underwater as soon as 2030.”

Computer models: at best, a 50-50 chance of being correct. The model will only be as accurate as the data used to create it. Figures lie…and liars figure.

In that case, no reason to spend a ton of money on riverfront bulkhead repairs. A temporary patch job should be sufficient.
