WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We invite you to follow WWAY Sports on Twitter @WWAYSports.

AKRON, OH (AP) — Tiger Woods made a run at 59, one of the last items missing from his resume.

Instead, he had to be content by tying his career best with a 9-under 61 and building a seven-shot lead Friday through 36 holes at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Pursuing his eighth victory at Firestone Country Club, Woods opened birdie-eagle. He had two more birdies on the front nine, then had four in a row to start the back nine in light rain.

Needing to go only 2 under over his last five holes, he missed birdie putts inside 10 feet at 15 and 17, but saved par on the last with a 25-footer.

LONG POND, PA (AP) — Jimmie Johnson sets a track record in winning the pole for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.

Johnson raced along the track with a lap of 180.654 mph.

Kyle Busch will start alongside Johnson, while Carl Edwards has qualified third. Ryan Newman starts fourth after winning at the Brickyard last weekend.

Johnson is seeking his fifth win of the year and second at Pocono.

FLORENCE, SC (SHARKS) — The Wilmington Sharks (16-9, 30-22) came up just short on the road to the Florence RedWolves (6-18, 20-29) as they lost 4-2 on Friday night.

The Sharks got on the board early in the top of the first inning as Zach Stephens stayed hot at the plate as he drove a ball into left field to score Andrew Amaro to make it 1-0 Sharks. The RedWolves tied up the ballgame in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a two out RBI double off the bat of Blake Massey to make it 1-1.

The RedWovles broke through in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they picked up three runs on four hits to take a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning. The Sharks were able to pick up a run in the top half of the seventh as Tyler Best scored on a pass ball to make it 4-2. The Sharks did have runners in scoring position in the same inning but were unable to score.

Tyson Ashcraft came into the top of the ninth inning to save the game for the RedWolves to give him his first save of the year. Matt Campbell was the winning pitcher to improve his record to 2-1 on the year. Stephens and Dolan both picked up two hits apiece for the Sharks. Massey had a good night at the plate for Florence as he went 3-4 with two RBIs.

The Wilmington Sharks will return back home on Saturday night for their final home game of the year as they take on the Morehead City Marlins with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

WILMINGTON, NC (HAMMERHEADS) — The Wilmington Hammerheads finished with a 2-1 victory over the Charleston Battery during their ‘Pink Night’ match on Friday night at Legion Stadium. Wilmington’s Kyle Greig and Mickael Oliveira added the two goals needed for the Hammerheads to shut down the Battery and continue their hopes into climbing the playoff ranks after being deducted one point in the standing last week.

In the first few minutes of play, Wilmington forward Cody Arnoux collided mid-air with Charleston goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper as he tried for the attempt. Cooper was unable to grip the ball and it was released back into play as Wilmington’s Kyle Greig followed through for a shot that soared inches above the crossbar for the first shot of the night.

Wilmington increased the score 1-0 off a goal by forward Kyle Greig in the 39th minute, assisted by Tom Parratt. This makes Greig’s fourth goal of the USL PRO regular season with the Wilmington Hammerheads.

The Battery were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute after a scuffle broke out between both teams in center field and midfielder Quinton Griffith was dismissed from the match after receiving a red card.

Wilmington forward Mickael Oliveira scored his first goal at Legion Stadium during Friday’s match-up, his second of the season, off a ground pass by Shawn Nicklaw in the penalty area rounding off the 75th minute of play. The two point lead by the Hammerheads decreased to one within the six minutes of allotted stoppage time as Charleston’s Haviel Cordoves prevented his team from finishing scoreless.

The Wilmington Hammerheads travel to take on the Dayton Dutch Lions on Sunday, August 4, for their final road match of the regular season as they look to claim a spot in the playoffs. The match kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live via UNATION. The Wilmington Hammerheads organization will be hosting a Watch Party for this match at the Buffalo Wild Wings on Old Eastwood Road in Wilmington, NC for supporters.
