WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- What was once a mound of dirt at 5510 Olsen Park Lane, slowly began transforming into a dream come true for people with special needs.
The area's first fully accessible ball field nearly 5 years in the making finally came to life this weekend for its grand opening. Kids tested out the BRAX Stadium PPD Miracle Field and the Kiwanis Miracle Playground for the first time, and really seemed to enjoy it.
"This is the only field here for special needs kids," said Linda Brown, an excited mother. "Special needs kids go out to other fields and the kids look a them. They don’t want to let the kids participate in the games. But on this field, the kids can participate and they can enjoy themselves. They won’t be looked at."
According to the Miracle League, 1 in 5 people in New Hanover, Brunswick, Columbus and Pender Counties have a disability. The new field gives these people an opportunity to play in a safe, comfortable environment.
