Wilmington, NC (WWAY) – Hundreds of people attended a public hearing Monday to voice their concerns about a proposed cement plant.

Titan America wants to build a plant in Castle Hayne, but not everyone agrees.

The North Carolina Division of Air Quality scheduled Monday’s hearing because Carolinas Cement Company requested a permit extension.

“I’m trying to understand why we are having a permit hearing. The permit as I understand is tied up in the court system,” said Veronica Carter.

Carter was just one of many who came to voice their concerns.

“We think there is a lot of bad information and at times we have not done the best job in the world getting it out,” said Bob Odom.

Odom is the project’s general manager.

More than 15,000 residents and nearly 200 doctors have signed petitions opposing the construction of the Titan cement plant.

“We know that the list of medical problems associated with pollution is a fairly long list,” said Jessica Cannon, a Wilmington obstetrician.

Company officials say Carolinas Cement Company will have the world’s lowest particulate matter limits and will follow EPA guidelines.

Kyle McIntyre supports the plant. “We need jobs up here. These are high paying jobs. Why not mine the material that comes out of the sovereign earth of North Carolina,” said McIntyre.

The state Division of Air Quality will continue to accept written comments on Titan America’s permit extension application.

A decision on the matter is expected by the end of the month.
