WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– A large area around Market Street near College Road in Wilmington was without power due to a transformer catching fire Tuesday night.

Wilmington police and fire departments had to use flash lights to direct the traffic.

Duke Energy Progress is working to get the power back on at this time.

This has been the top story on your web site for 10 hours, and had TV coverage at 11:00 last night. It affected something like 5 businesses, some street lights, and a single traffic signal.

The power was off in the area for about an hour. And, despite what New Hanover dispatch said, it wasn’t a “transformer catching fire” (every power line flash, lightning strike, or fuse blowing is always an “exploding transformer” – which is actually a pretty rare event)

It appeared to be a damaged fuse holder that was replaced by one guy in a single bucket truck. Hardly the major outage you make it out to be.
