WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– A season-opening contest at Final Four participant Notre Dame, a three-game tournament in Cancun, Mexico, and six home contests highlight the 2013-14 UNCW women’s basketball non-conference schedule.

After squaring off against one of the toughest non-league slates in program history one year ago, the Seahawks will once again be tested when they face nine teams that finished with 15 or more victories last season, including six clubs that surpassed the 20-win plateau. Eight of the Seahawks’ 13 non-conference opponents qualified for postseason play, with five of the programs (Charlotte, Elon, Iowa, Notre Dame and Tulane) winning at least one game in postseason.

The Seahawks begin preparations for the new season with an exhibition contest against UNC Pembroke (Nov. 4) at Trask Coliseum before opening the regular campaign at Notre Dame (Nov. 9). It will be the first-ever matchup between the Seahawks and Fighting Irish in women’s hoops.

After its season-opening matchup with Notre Dame, UNCW returns home for contests against future Colonial Athletic Association foe Elon (Nov. 13) and Northern Kentucky (Nov. 16). The Seahawks then head to Buies Creek to renew acquaintances with longtime rival Campbell (Nov. 19) and host Tulane (Nov. 22) before traveling to Cancun for the 2013 Cancun Challenge (Nov. 28-30). The Seahawks will play Boston College, Iowa and Southern California in the three-day event.

December gets under way with road contests at Richmond (Dec. 7) and Wake Forest (Dec. 16). A matchup with another 2013 NCAA Tournament entry, Liberty (Dec. 19), kicks off a three-game home stand that will bring the month to a close with games against Florida Atlantic (Dec. 29) and Appalachian State (Dec. 31).

UNCW rings in the New Year with a visit to UNC Charlotte the final non-conference game (Jan. 3) of the schedule.

The 2013-14 CAA schedule will be announced at a later date.

WILMINGTON, NC (HAMMERHEADS) -– UNCW and the Wilmington Hammerheads will stage a soccer doubleheader on Aug. 17 when the Seahawks take on Longwood in an exhibition game followed by the regular season finale for the Hammerheads against Antigua.

The UNCW-Longwood match begins at 5 p.m. Kick-off for the Hammerheads and Antigua is set for 7:30 p.m.
“As our season comes to a close we are proud to help launch the beginning of UNCW’s season,” said Matt Saddler, general manager of the Hammerheads. “For anyone who lives in the Wilmington area this will be a unique opportunity to see the best soccer this region has to offer with the Hammerhead and Seahawk teams playing on the same date and at the same location with two games being offered for the price of one.”
The Seahawks open their 13th season under veteran head coach Aidan Heaney when they play the first of two exhibition games for the 2013 season. UNCW qualified for the Colonial Athletic Association tournament one year ago before bowing out in overtime, 4-3, at James Madison.

“Playing a doubleheader before the Hammerhead match at Legion Stadium will be a great opportunity for our players to play in front of the Hammerhead fans and showcase their abilities,” said Heaney. “We are looking forward to getting our preseason underway and hopefully the Hammerheads faithful will support us this fall once their season is completed.”

Heaney returns the core of a last season’s team, including First-Team All-CAA striker Jamie Dell and CAA All-Rookie defender Colin Bonner.
