WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Cape Fear Community College is getting ready to open its newest building.

You paid for the Union Station building on N. Front St., now you get a chance to see where your tax dollars went.

There's still work being done to finish the building, but we got a sneak peak of what students and faculty can expect.

The building, designed to look like its namesake railroad station that once stood here, will house CFCC's Student Services, Healthcare Department and a community meeting center.

We got a tour of Union Station's new nursing and operating labs, and even got a chance to hang out with some STUDs... simulated test unisex dummies that is.

CFCC Health Science Chair Regina McBarron has been a nurse since 1966.

"I'm lucky, I guess," she said. "I've always been able to get excited about health science and new things and even a few old things."

Union Station is full of new things: new equipment, new classrooms and brand new, state-of-the-art healthcare labs.

The building, including the parking deck, cost tax payers nearly $70 million. McBarron says the money for the project was well spent.

"Without a doubt," she said. "It was certainly worth it."

The excitement has Surgical Tech Program Director Denise Gautsch searching for the right words.

"I don't... I'm not sure that there are words to describe how ecstatic, thankful, grateful, excited for the students to see what they're going to be able to do in this training," Gautsch said.

The five-story building is still in the final stages of construction, but the third and fourth floor are open. Classes start friday.

A CFCC spokesman says the entire building should be done by the fall.
