RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Bishop Emeritus F. Joseph Gossman, the fourth Bishop of the Raleigh diocese, died Monday at the age of 83 following a long illness.

He served as Bishop of Raleigh from 1975 until 2006.

During his episcopacy, Bishop Gossman spoke out on issues from the plight of the poor, to care and concern of the immigrant, to strong opposition to capital punishment.

Bishop Gossman played a leading role in the creation of the North Carolina Lutheran-Roman Catholic Covenant that was signed in 1991 by the Dioceses of Raleigh and Charlotte and the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

A celebratory mass for Bishop Gossman is tomorrow at Sacred Heart Cathedral at noon.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.

A “Great Man”, except for the fact that the ‘Diocese Of Raleigh’, and him, were near the top of the list, in 2002, when it came to the 2002 Catholic Priest Child Rape Cover up.

He was considered a “Great Leader”. Except to the Catholic children that were raped by priests, he covered for.

He covered for 3 child-raping priests. Instead of calling the police. He was a lying fake, and certainly no “Holy Man”, in my book.

He apparently was also strongly opposed to punishment of those who sexually abused children.

To have a celebratory mass for him is to celebrate hypocrisy itself.

When is the Roman Catholic Church going to finally step up the plate and start doing the right thing? Celebrating a person who covers up sexual child abuse certainly isn’t it.

No wonder Catholics are leaving, by the millions, when they honor leaders, like this, who sidestepped, when he knew children were being raped.

The “Brotherhood Of SIlence” is just as strong as it’s ever been., in the Catholic Church. Many good Catholics refuse to “Pay, Pray, and Obey”, when such evil is whitewashed, and such “Sheppards”, like this man, are honored.

There is no surprise that the RCC and the ELCA teamed up. Neither of them follow the Bible.

“The Catholic Church sees the Mass or Eucharist as “the source and summit of the Christian life” (as per Wikipedia).

I fail to see how the Roman Catholic Church can reconcile that definition with celebrating, in a religious service, the life of a person who deliberately and illegally covered up crimes of pedophilia.

If that’s possible within a religious context, religious instruction within this organization has become just a crock of pustulence that someone is making up for monetary or political gain.

How long have you supported pedophilia?

The spiteful, unjustified, and hateful comments here are a testament that the spirit of good-old boy nativism and anti-Catholicism are still a reality in our region. Shame on all of you for hiding behind the pretense of the sexual abuse scandal to level such opprobrium on the late Bishop.

I am disgusted at the evil comments that have been made about Bishop Gossman. This is what our society is becoming: judgmental, hateful and slanderous. Those of us who knew the Bishop knew that he was a saint who gave his life in the humble service of others. It is easy to go online and say all kinds of things about someone when you don’t know all the facts. Your words mean nothing. If you are able to live a life of love and integrity like Bishop Gossman did then maybe you can have an opinion. He was not perfect. None of us are. However your ignorance is inexcusable. You diminish the light in the world by spreading darkness. I knew him. I loved him and God knows the truth. “Let you who are without sin cast the first stone.”
