PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Michael Vick was nearly flawless, Nick Foles looked sharp and the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback competition remains close.

Vick and Foles each led the Eagles to touchdown drives in a 14-9 victory over Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night.

No matter who Chip Kelly chooses to run his up-tempo offense, it appears both quarterbacks can operate this system efficiently. Vick and Foles have combined to put up 28 points on eight-plus drives in two games.

Vick, the four-time Pro Bowl pick, has the statistical edge over Foles, the second-year pro. But Kelly hasn’t given any indication he’s leaning toward one over the other, and he seems willing to wait until after the preseason to pick a No. 1 guy.

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) – Chris Stroud and Ross Fisher each shot 6-under 64 on Thursday to share the first-round lead in the Wyndham Championship.

Eight players – defending champion Sergio Garcia, Matt Jones, Robert Garrigus, Jordan Spieth, Trevor Immelman, Morgan Hoffman, Patrick Reed and Andrew Svoboda – shot 65.

John Senden and Stuart Appleby were among the five players at 66 at the final tournament before the PGA Tour’s playoffs begin next week.

It was the highest score for an opening-round leader since the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008.

Stroud had eight birdies during his best round of the year, which came at the Donald Ross-designed course that had vexed him through the previous five years.
