Investigation continues into New Hanover Co. sweepstakes parlor

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Warrants have been issued for two of the co-owners of a sweepstakes parlor New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies busted last month.

Investigators say the men live out of state. James Monaghan was served Wednesday. Officials are still looking for Jimmy Gerodemos.

Analysts are also taking a closer look at the gaming computers that were being used.

"At this point, detectives are waiting for the forensic analysis of the computer itself and the analysis of that software to determine if there was indeed a violation of the statute or if it's technically within the statute," New Hanover County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jason Augst said.

In an earlier story, we quoted local attorney Thomas Hicks, who represents the owners of the sweepstakes parlor that was shut down. Mr. Hicks is, of course, a lawyer doing his job in representing his clients. We did not mean to imply or suggest that in representing his clients, mr. Hicks did anything improper.

I wish the WPD would focus on the thug shootings and violence downtown instead of these business owners. Once again the police, as paid with our money, have their priorities out of whack. Stop pulling people over for speeding, stop shutting down sweepstakes parlors, and focus on real crime. Is that too logical for the WPD?

If the the NCGS declares any kind of act a crime, then it is a "real" crime. If the people running the sweepstakes parlor had not broken the law then the sheriff's department could focus on the "thug shootings and violence downtown". Taxpayer paid or not, the police enforce all laws, including traffic laws. They pull speeders because a driver behind the wheel of a two-ton vehicle should be moving at a safe rate of speed. Otherwise, he is a danger to other people on the road.

This story has nothing to do with WPD. It is about the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

Seems to me before the Sheriff department goes in and shuts a business down, arrests anyone and puts people out of work. It would have done a complete investigation and went to the judge with absolute facts. The poor judge that signed the warrants is also to blame. How many other tickets and raids has this sheriff done and abused his power? That's whats scary !!!!

These places are terrible! My mother in law would go to one almost every day she could while in chemo before she passed. She said it got her mind off things, she got to socialize with other seniors and she said she liked the games and sometimes she won. (note I said sometimes not all the time)..that 10 dollars a day she spent could have went to better things...my wife and I have had an old tv for a long time and we asked her to buy us a new one and she said she isnt giving up her sweepstakes to get us one! Thank goodness we now have her whole house and a nice flat screen and my wife and i never been to a sweepstakes!

You should be so ashamed of yourself!! Your mother-in-law spent HER money as she saw fit, it doesn't matter if it was $10 a day, $20 a day or even a $100.00 it was HER money!! You were mad because she wouldn't buy you a tv?? You're how old and you expect your mother-in-law to buy you something, GO GET YOUR OWN TV!! Now you say "THANK GOODNESS WE NOW HAVE HER WHOLE HOUSE AND A NICE FLAT SCREEN and then have the nerve to say you or your wife have never been to a sweepstakes...WOW you have some nerve!! Would love to know if your wife feels the same way?? Wonder how your mother-in-law feels about this....hope you sleep well in her house...Hope she visits you soon!!

I would be ashamed to tell everyone that I asked my mother-in-law to buy me a new TV. Then you gonna tell everyone that now that she is dead and gone you are enjoying her house and a flat screen TV. Get a job and buy your own TV.

Is New Hanover County in Russia? How can you shut down a business and issue arrest warrants without knowing if anything is illegal?

With all other crime and malfeasance cured in our fine port city, it's time to hunt down the nastiest of criminal elements in our midst: the sweepstakes parlor owners!

One of the solid rules of life: If the government isn't getting a piece of the action, they'll ban it until they can figure out how to confiscate a sizable cut!

only reason is nc dont like competition . they want people to buy nc lottery tickets. i have never brought one
