WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach Mayor Bob Lewis was all smiles after a meeting with New Hanover County Commissioners this morning.

They approved a $500,000 grant to spruce up the town’s boardwalk.

Lewis says the town will break ground before next month with plans to have a grand opening by spring.

The mayor says the new boardwalk is not all about looks. It has added benefits.

“It’s inclusive of everybody, so individual disabilities, really focusing on wide beach accesses,” Lewis said. “Today we have a five-foot wide beach access. A little difficult for people with disabilities getting up and down. These will be 10-foot-plus beach accesses.”

The money from New Hanover County will be added to money from state grants, so Carolina Beach won’t have to spend any money from the town’s general fund.
