ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WCTI12.com) — A man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for a drunk-driving wreck that killed a 19-year-old woman in Onslow County.

Jacob Beitz, 31, of Hampstead, also pleaded guilty to DWI and two assault charges Monday morning. He was sentenced to between 12-and-a-half and 15 years in prison for the murder and assault charges, and will then serve two years for DWI.

According to investigators, Beitz rear-ended a Nissan Altima on Highway 17 outside Holly Ridge in November 2011. Killed in that wreck was Jacinta Fisher, a  19-year-old college student from Onslow County who was sitting in the backseat.

There is no reason to drive drunk when there are so many alternatives. Take a taxi, call a friend, stay there, call a tow truck and get you and your car home. I hope he has to stay in jail maximum time.

I hope he does the maximum time as well. I don’t think the punishment is harsh enough. People really need to get past the mentality of letting drunk drivers get a pass because the alcohol mitigates their responsibility. Instead, they should consider the fact that the person makes the decision to drink, knowing that they will be getting behind the wheel.

Not harsh enough? I know he killed a girl, but not in cold blood, he was drinking and driving. 12 1/2-15yrs for a mistake is a long time (not saying it isn’t justified), I just don’t understand why you would want more time/harsher sentence? The point of a sentence is to punish and hopefully rehabilitate…any longer and he would basically live in jail for the rest of his life…with no gain at all. The victims mother forgives him, he will hopefully learn from this and come out as a productive member of society.
