RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A US House member from western North Carolina says she will not seek the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Kay Hagan.

US Rep. Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk said Tuesday she’s been humbled by the encouragement she’s received to get into the Senate race next spring but wants to continue representing her constituents in the 5th District.

The Associated Press obtained a copy of a statement from Foxx announcing her decision. She says her current position is “the best job in North Carolina.”

The decision leaves state House Speaker Thom Tillis and Cary physician Greg Brannon as the top names planning to enter the GOP primary. State Senate leader Phil Berger is still considering the idea.
