RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A former US Marine lieutenant who twice ran as a Republican for Congress will serve as the new director of the NC Division of Veterans Affairs.

Ilario Pantano of Wilmington will start his new job Sept. 5. He will be paid an annual state salary of $90,000.

Pantano was charged with two counts of premeditated murder in 2004 after he shot two unarmed Iraqis and then hung a taunting sign near their bullet-riddled bodies. A Marine general later dropped the charges, ruling there was insufficient evidence to proceed to court martial. Pantano resigned in 2005.

Pantano campaigned unsuccessfully for North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District seat in 2010 and 2012. He was also vice chairman of Veterans for McCrory, a group affiliated with the campaign of now Gov. Pat McCrory.

  • Guest2020 says:

I don’t care two cents about Pantano, but there were a couple of articles I found that stated that there was an NCIS investigator who cleared Pantano of any wrongdoing.

  • Angewidert says:

The fact that Pantano has never held a serious administrative position in a large organization, or that the position was crass political patronage by McCrory is something you can live with … but … God forbid he should come from somewhere else; that’s the big deal?

“Damn yankee”, “carpetbagger”, “send him packing back North” … That’s all your little mind can process? Really?

Just a little update … The South wasn’t successful in seceding from the Union (that was over 150 years ago by the way) and we’re all one big homogenous country where in today’s modern world people move from place to place all the time. This might come as a shock to someone as provincial as you, but folks, even from here, move to other areas of the country as well, just like others do.

People like you seem to go out of their way to portray yourselves as narrow minded, provincial xenophobes. I fail to see the point in doing that.

It would be nice to see one of you “Southern supremacists” actually provide a logical, comprehensive explanation for this continuing stupidity.

  • GuestMan. says:

Actually, we don’t see it as stupidity.
The logical , comprehensive explanation is that the majority of “Yankees” that move into LLI(Little Long Island) places like Brunswick Forest, Waterford, etc., are for the most part condescending, arrogant clones of people like you who for some reason think you have some sort of intellectual superiority over Southern people.
Let me assure you this is not the truth.
Maybe if you tried to assimilate yourself into southern culture instead of isolating yourselves in small enclaves of like minded people (ghettoes, if you will) then you would not be thought of in this way.
Anyway, I can tell from your post that you have not tried, so don’t expect anything from your southern hosts.

  • Guest2020 says:

What is stupid is for yankees to come to the south and do everything they can do be offensive. Instead of accepting us for who we are they deride us about our way of life. They complain about how things are different. They overrun our neighborhoods and do everything within their power to diminish our rights as property owners.

I have heard yankees complain about our laid back way of doing things. And how we don’t get in a hurry to do things. When it counts, we get things done. Otherwise, what is the hurry. There is no harm in taking it easy and enjoying life as it comes instead of rushing it.

I really hate it when yankees complain about our southern drawl and our manner of speech. There is an line from an Alabama song that addresses this perfectly, “I’ll speak my southern English as natural as I please.” If you don’t like that, you can go back up north.

When I worked in retail, I heard numerous complaints about the products we didn’t carry. Well, my husband went to school in Michigan and when he went to the grocery store, he only had one option for grits. Did he go and complain to customer service? Did he demand that they care a larger variety of grits? No. He accepted that people in Michigan don’t eat grits much and he made do with what was available.

I had a lady from Connecticut complain about us not having a lot of greenery around here. I don’t reckon you can get much more green than the Green Swamp.

You don’t need to look any further than the rules and regulations of POA’s in the predominantly yankee neighborhoods, to know that yankees, in general, cannot mind their own business and let people live in the quiet enjoyment of their own homes. Who does it hurt for a man to have a window air conditioner in an upstairs room? I lived in a small neighborhood that outlawed flag poles because a man near the entrance of the neighborhood liked to fly various flags including the Jolly Roger and the Confederate Battle Flag. It wasn’t hurting anyone either. They just didn’t agree with his politics.

Please tell us how you would feel if your people had suffered through an invasion, had war crimes committed against them, and got robbed blind during the reconstruction era following the war. How would you feel if we came up north and complained about what you don’t have, tried to tell you what to do with your land, and constantly called you stupid for the way you talk? I don’t think you would like it very much, but then again, maybe you would.

And we were never meant to be one big homogeneous country. We were intended to be a group of independent, sovereign states, who pooled our resources, for a limited number of things, for the good of all the states. We were never meant to be run by a central government.

  • Guestomfg says:

Waited around long enough and sucked up to the right people to finally get a job. Our new Gov is a friggin jerk ! WHAT qualifies him for this job? Besides sucking.

  • Angewidert says:

Have lived here for almost two decades. Have NEVER critiqued anyone’s way of life except for those who prey on the weak or engage in criminal activity. Have NEVER made a truly derogatory remark about ANYONE’S speech patterns. Have NEVER lived in an enclave nor have I ever tried to influence a neighborhood’s way of life outside of exercising my right to vote in my community.

In your world, no northerner “comments”; they all “complain”(as per your post). Sounds a little biased to me.

As to war crimes and invasions: BOTH sides of that war suffered massive losses. BOTH sides had war crimes committed against them. BOTH sides of that war had their own reasons for fighting. ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO FIGHT THAT WAR FOREVER JUST BECAUSE THE SOUTH LOST? Is this the preaking Balkans where they have blood vendettas for six hundred years? When does the insanity stop? Never?

We were never meant to be run by a central government: That’s just not true. Re-read the history of our country and it’s formation and you’ll find otherwise. What do you propose; secession again? Has reality completely been pushed off the table for you?

After two decades of living here I still have to put up with this insulting gratuitous crap about Yankees regardless of whether a northerner was involved in something or not. I’m just sick and tired of being insulted for no damn good reason.

If your whole argument is still based on a war that happened over 150 years ago, and that seems to be the real issue here, there’s absolutely no sense in my continuing to be polite about this. Let’s face it, no matter how I live my life your just going to illogically dump on me just because I wasn’t born here.

If that’s the case, you can just go (fill in the blank).

  • Angewidert says:

Never lived in an enclave. My friends and associates are from diverse backgrounds. I never inferred an intellectual superiority. I just said I was sick and tired of knee-jerk bigotry.

The fact that you do so not know me, as you do so not know most people who move here from elsewhere would be laughable if it wasn’t so completely wrong. I have had the privilege of having lived all over this county as well as in other countries and have never seen this kind of bigotry elsewhere. That’s a pretty good indicator that for whatever reasons there’s still an unusually high percentage of xenophobes living around here.

Anyway, I can tell you that you have not even tried to understand others, so don’t expect me to continue to treat you with anymore respect than you’re not treating me.

If a meaningful dialog won’t get it done, perhaps anger will. Keep putting down others and sooner or later that’ll bite you right on you own butt.

  • Guestgr says:

You do realize that Pat McCrory, Phil Berger and Thom Tillis are ALL from other states other than NC, right?

Why would anyone be surprised that they have no interest in IMPROVING NC? Those of us who are natives are sickened by what our lovely state is becoming under these thugs. We’ll be envious of the poorest county in Mississippi by the time they’ve decimated my state.

PLEASE, whether you’re from NC or a transplant, VOTE THEM OUT IN NOVEMBER 2014/2016!!!

  • GuestMan. says:

Obviously, you are not sich and tired and angry enough; you are still here.
Why would you want to live in a state where the people hold you in contempt? That is, if we are all xenophobes like you say. We are certainly not fearful of you.
As far as respect, you have displayed none since your first post, unless, of course, where you come from calling people “provencial”, “xenophobes”, and “narrow minded” is regarded as a compliment of some sort. I don’t think you will be held in high esteem in NC by describing your neighbors in those terms.

  • Angewidert says:

Because it’s a great place to live and the vast majority of people that I come into contact with are terrific.

I never said ALL of you are xenophobes; just a certain vociferous few.

My first post was addressed specifically to the first poster. That poster’s position was based specifically on Pantano not being qualified exclusively because he was from somewhere else. That’s the textbook definition of xenophobia.

I don’t describe my neighbors in those terms, only people who act like that and my neighbors don’t.

As to being fearful of me: I don’t expect you to be, just don’t expect me, or others like me, to roll over and play dead when we’re being gratuitously insulted for no damn good reason. Life is a two way street.

    Thanks for sharing your views.

  • GuestMan. says:

I guess where you are from that “Southern supremists” and “continuing stupidity” are compliments as well.
Textbook xenophobia is an irrational fear of people that are foreign or different. I think you are using this word incorrectly with your posts because people of the south are not scared of you and others like you. It is more that we don’t have any respect for you.
I think prejudice would be a better word to use when discussing our feelings about our Yankee brothers and sisters.

  • ENL says:

Ah the poor spineless liberals. They would rather have dumpling Bev as Gov.

  • Guest 10101 says:

I looked up xenophobia and here’s some of what I found:

Xenophobia can manifest itself in many ways involving the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup, including a fear of losing identity.

Looks like Angewidert is right on this one more than wrong.

What I’m seeing here is a person from elsewhere who’s just fed up with being generically labeled regardless of what that person does or doesn’t do. Sometimes reading these posts I get the same feeling. Are some Northerners obnoxious? Sure, as are some Southerners. No one’s exempt.

Perhaps it’s time to stop with the name calling. Period.

  • Snowman says:

I supported McCrory 100% until now… I was proud of the fact that he stood up to the left and did what was right and needed to be done to better the State of NC… I even overlooked the fact that he did a “Sleazly” move and hired two punks and gave them an unwarranted job and salary. But now McCrory crossed the line and hired a damm yankee (Pantano) who has never held a real job in his life and was a sucker on the backs of the taxpayers while he was in the military. Pantano murdered 2 humans and walked away a free man. The citizens of NC have spoken many, many times and said we don’t want the carpetbagger (pantano) here. What does McCrory do? Give him a grand title and salary; in return for the money he gave McCrory. So having said all that, I can say, that until McCrory removes Pantano and sends him packing back north, I will vote for someone else next election cycle.

  • Guest 7619 says:

I too will never vote for McCrory again….This is probably repaying Pantano for some huge campaign contribution. The corruption continues unchecked.

  • GuestYL says:

Pantano was accused of shooting the Iraquis in the back. This was what the case was initally predicated upon. The ME determined that that was NOT the case and that Pantano was innocent of those charges. It didn’t need to go to trial because the case was bogus.

He ordered those Iraquis to stand down (in both Arabic and English) and they did not comply but made menacing advances towards him. He reacted by protecting himself and his men. Would I have emptied 2 magazines into them? Maybe, if I felt that they may have had incendiary devices or other weapons. I have never experienced the emotionally draining stress of serving during wartime. I would imagine our soldiers have a split second to make a life or death decision.

Would I have put a sign up. Probably not but then again I haven’t been in war. It’s ugly, horrific, nasty and soldiers may react in ways they normally wouldn’t.

  • GuestMan. says:

HE said they made advances but if you read testimony from other soldiers in the squad, they said it never happened. He stopped to reload after they were dead and then the little yellow “war hero” pumped thirty more rounds in them. He is a POS like I said and has no reason to be part of the government of the State of North Carolina.

  • Guesttoo says:

Assume you’re writing of Veterans and not animal doctors? I would agree that he understands the issues that Veterans face. That would quality him to be on a citizens advisory board.

I find it fascinating that the current governor has given jobs worth $250,000 a year to three completely unqualified individuals. This, in itself, is proof that crooks posing as politicians from both sides of the isle see the citizens of this state as cash cows and they can take the money and do with it whatever they damn well please.

“Pay to Play” is alive and well here in NC!

  • guesty says:

He was a community organizer in the past.

  • taxpayer says:

    so was Obama.

  • GuestMan. says:

He is a man that emptied two 30 round magazines into unarmed civilians. Then he lied about it. He is a carpet-bagger that is unfit to live in NC, and should definitely not have a $90,000 a year job at the taxpayers expense.

  • Monkey Junction says:

Obama was voted into office by an election. Pantano has never won an election. In fact, he has lost almost every election he has been involved in.

  • guesty says:

That is who I’m talking about.

  • guesty says:

I was talking about Obummer as the community organizer.

  • YL says:

Either educate yourself or stop lying. Pantano was found INNOCENT by a well known forensic medical examiner. The Iraquis were not shot in the back but, as the forensic evidence proved, in the front. The military did NOT perform autopsies on the bodies but charged Pantano with murder. The medical examiner insisted that the bodies be exhumed and autopsies performed. Charges were subsequently dropped because of the evidence.

Your ignorance and arrogance in this matter is rather astounding.

  • GuestMan. says:

He was not found innocent. It never went to trial. I did not say they were shot in the back; you’re the one that brought that up.
He did empty 60 rounds into unarmed civilians after he had all of his men facing the other way and then he put a sign on them like he was really proud of shooting unarmed people from about 6 feet away. He is a POS and their is no ignorance on my part in any of this.
I may be a little arrogant though.

  • James Taylor says:

One more non-qualified person get a high paying state job. The gubnor did say he was about creating jobs.

  • Guesswatttttttttt says:

The governor lied when he stated that the two (other) unqualified employees, from his campaign staff, which he just hired, beat out all the other applicants who applied for the same jobs! In fact the job was not even posted, so no one else applied at all. These two 24-25 year olds, now holding high State positions, make approximately $80,000.00 each!! They turn out to be unqualified for even entry level positions!
    This must republican welfare!

  • taxpayer says:

a vet in this job than one who never served. At least he understands the issues that vets face.

Speaking of unqualified person…we have one residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

  • DollarDivots says:

Good gawd, what an insult to the people of NC

  • GuestMan. says:

The smell coming out of Raleigh these days is getting pretty bad.

  • wuff says:

I am a life long Republican and Vietnam Vet, McCrory you have lost my vote.

  • beach guy says:

Now before we start let me say that I voted against him twice because Mike McIntyre is a good man doing a good job for the people in this district but Wow a vet representing vets and everyone’s upset:
Look at it from a Vet’s point of view If he’s willing to Kill to protect his troops(his words not mine) he should make a decent advocate of those who served especially combat vets with service related disabilities and his background in banking should be a plus as well.

  • SurfCityTom says:

    he is a state appointee

i must have missed something; i just do not see that reference

  • Vog46 says:

    Here yah go….

“RALEIGH, N.C. A former U.S. Marine lieutenant who faced murder charges for shooting a pair of unarmed Iraqis has been named as the new director of the N.C. Division of Veterans Affairs.

Ilario Pantano will start his new state job Sept. 5 and be paid an annual salary of $90,000.”

Even you have to be blanching at the excesses of this administration

  • TheTruth says:

It’s amazing what setting up 2 Iraqis to be whacked can do for your career.

  • Guest 10101 says:

“He was also vice chairman of Veterans for McCrory, a group affiliated with the campaign of now Gov. Pat McCrory.”

At the present time, that’s all the qualifications he needs. Of course if one eliminates the concept of political patronage as a qualifier, he’s totally unqualified.

Democrats, now Republicans; same old stuff. Too bad NC veterans will have to suffer as a result of this appointment. Oh well, politicians don’t really give a crap about anyone but themselves these days.

  • Cement McRory Loves $$$ says:

Pantano is qualified. Congrats. Overpaid but a good fit for the job.

MCcRory however has been a “The Joker” (Batman reference) smiling while putting criminals in charge of N.C. Sheriffs (Barfield Jr…public servant? Gangbanger?), and promoting criminals to higher offices and smirking while he supports criminal lawyers, politicians and pays back $$$ Woody White, PACS, special interests, and reporters are afraid to dig and look behind the face-painted smile of the NC Gov.

Pat? Are you there Pat? Have you ever read the Constitution?

How much did local Wilmingtonians like White and his people (Benford, Cralle, GOP Chair Rhonda Amorosa of Titan Lobbying Fame(?))…pay for a “Get out of Jail Free Card” signed by the Gov. Pat? Where can normal folks buy them??? I want to be just like Woody and our dysfunctional local leaders.
