House fire leaves family of 9 homeless

ROCKY POINT, NC (WWAY) -- A housefire off Sandy Bend Road in Rocky Point Friday evening left nine people homeless.

Fire demolished the family's uninsured home, leaving them with just the clothes on their back only days into the new school year.

"It could not happen at a worse time. It is just bad timing," said family member Michael Arnold.

It's a loss the family says they have dealt with once before.

"In 2011, we were living in Pamlico County and Hurricane Irene... we lost everything there," said another family member Connie Arnold.

The American Red Cross is helping with food and shelter over the next several days. After that, the family hopes to start rebuilding their lives for the second time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No one was injured.

I want to donate also. The news just reported that the Red Cross can no longer help them.

No insurance? Doesn't look like they were starving thats for sure so they could afford it. Now they want help, HELP yourselves and get insurance !

Your compassion is overwhelming. Speaking as someone who has lost everything before, I hope you never experience the same thing. These people are hurting. They are struggling, and all you can do is criticize. Pathetic.

I have zero compassion for people like this. This would never happen to me because I am RESPONSIBLE for myself and I have insurance (over and above what I need) I have savings/cash just incase I need it in an emergency. You would never see me or my family begging on TV. I bet these folks are on welfare and foodstamps already. MOST peoples struggles are self inflicted. The fire wasn't but how they went about NOT preparing for one was. I bet a few of them dont even have a spare tire in their trunks.

REALLY? many things can happen to you in life that insurance won't cover...all i can say to you NO COMPASSION IS... but for the grace of GOD there go you!

I have no problem with them receiving help, but they should be required to buy home owner's insurance, at the very least renters's insurance to cover the contents of their home. Insurance IS NOT EXPENSIVE. I pay $35 a month for condo insurance and $300 a year for flood insurance. I am an adult who lives by herself with zero kids who is struggling as well.

There are how many adults in that home? Surely they can afford $30 to $50 some dollars a month between the four of them.

Does anyone have any clue as to how to help them with donations of clothing and school supplies? I have already started collecting...

How old are the children and is there a do location where I can donate clothing for the children for school?

My prayers for the Arnold Family.

They need brains and common sense not prayer.
