TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Topsail Beach celebrated its 50th birthday this weekend with good music, plenty of food, and lots of dancing.
It's a milestone birthday Mayor Howard Braxton says wouldn't be possible without the beach's clean sands and family atmosphere.
"That's the secret to it," Braxton said. "To keep a nice clean beach and try to keep it as wide as possible, and keep it so people can go out and have fun."
Doris Jenkins has called Topsail Beach home since the 1940's.
"Right after the WWII, there was hardly anything over here except for what the military left," said Jenkins.
She has seen topsail beach grow "leaps and bounds" over the past 50 years, mainly from the view of her skating rink built back in 1963. She says now the beach attracts thousands of people every summer, but they still enjoy a little taste of the oldies at her rink.
