SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) – A man visiting Surf City with his wife was struck by lightning on Monday.
Police say Demitri Khorokhorimn actually died, but the quick response of strangers, helped bring him back to life.
Witnesses say this experience was much more than they bargained for. They came to Surf City to vacation, but they’ll leave as heroes.
“All of us jumped out of our seats, the baby was screaming and then about two minutes later someone came running up our step saying that someone was struck by lighting,” said Vanessa Boduch.
Boduch and her family have spent the past several days enjoying their vacation, but on Monday they responded to a call for help.
“It was terrifying. It was the most frightening thing I have ever experienced,” said Boduch.
Around 3:30 Monday afternoon, police say lightning hit 35-year-old Demitri Khorokhorimn on the head and then passed through his arm and to his wife.
It killed him instantly, but witnesses were able to bring him back from the dead.
“He wasn’t breathing, there was no pulse. We started to resuscitate him….I was doing mouth to mouth,” said Barbara Rowett.
Rowett is a registered nurse and was visiting the Boduch family when they all sprang into action.
“I learned my lesson. If you hear thunder, get off the beach. It made me a believer,” said Doug Rowett.
The group of friends, say this wasn’t what they were expecting on their beach getaway, but they are glad they were able to help.
Surf City Police Chief Mike Halstead says the victim is in stable condition at the burn center in Chapel Hill.
His wife did suffer a few burns, but was not taken to the hospital.
