GREENVILLE, NC (AP) -- Shane Carden threw two touchdown passes and East Carolina beat Florida Atlantic 31-13 on Thursday night in the Pirates' final Conference USA opener.

Carden was 17 of 25 for 191 yards for East Carolina (2-0, 1-0) against the overmatched Owls (0-2, 0-1). The Pirates are leaving Conference USA after the season for the American Athletic Conference, while the Owls are in their first season in C-USA after bolting from the Sun Belt.

Carden threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Davon Grayson in the first quarter, and connected with Justin Hardy on a 1-yarder in the second. Last week in a 52-38 victory over Old Dominion, Carden set school records with 447 yards and 46 completions and matched the TD mark with five.

Vintavious Cooper had 20 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes for 49 yards.

Florida Atlantic, coming off a 34-6 loss at Miami in its opener, is 4-25 in its last 29 games.

Greg Hankerson threw a 2-yard scoring pass to William Dukes with 1:03 left, and Mitch Anderson made two field goals for the Owls.

DENVER (AP) - Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos waited eight long months, then another 33 minutes, to get the season started.

A record-tying seven touchdown passes - something no one had done in 44 years - made it worth the while.

Connecting with his most prized addition, Wes Welker, former college basketball player Julius Thomas and Demaryius Thomas for two TDs each, Manning directed Denver to a 49-27 victory over the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night in the NFL opener, a much-anticipated rematch against the team that ended the Broncos' playoff run in January.

Manning is the sixth QB in NFL history to throw seven TD passes in a game and the first since Joe Kapp did it for Minnesota against Baltimore on Sept. 28, 1969.

Manning was 27 of 42 for 462 yards with seven TDs and no interceptions.

NEW YORK (AP) - Top-seeded Novak Djokovic quickly overcame a one-set lull to reach the U.S. Open semifinals for the seventh consecutive year, beating 21st-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 on Thursday night.

Djokovic, the 2011 champion at Flushing Meadows, won his first four matches of the tournament in straight sets. But he faltered in the third set of his quarterfinal against Youzhny , making 16 unforced errors and getting broken twice.

Djokovic next faces ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka, who upset defending champion Andy Murray 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.

While Wawrinka will making his major semifinal debut Saturday, Djokovic will be trying to reach his fifth U.S. Open final. In addition to his title, he was the runner-up in New York in 2007, 2010 and 2012.

Djokovic is 12-2 against Wawrinka.

NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Murray's reign as defending U.S. Open champion ended Thursday in a surprising, frustration-filled 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 quarterfinal loss to ninth-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka.

Third-seeded Murray won his first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows last year and his second at Wimbledon this July. But he was overmatched from the beginning on a blustery day in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

After making 15 unforced errors against only eight winners in the first set, Murray cracked his racket on the court, then mangled it after walking over to the sideline.

This marks the first time since 2010 - when he lost in the third round to Wawrinka - that Murray failed to reach the semifinals at the U.S. Open.

Wawrinka reached his first Grand Slam semifinal.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Players from six other schools will join host UNCW this weekend when Coach Mait DuBois and the men’s tennis team stages the UNCW Invitational at Empie Park’s Althea Gibson Tennis Center.

The Seahawks, ranked 43rd in the final 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, are making their first appearance of the fall season in the event, which runs Friday through Sunday. Overall, UNCW will compete in seven tournaments before the semester break.

“We’re very excited to start the fall season and always love to play here in Wilmington,” said DuBois, the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Coach-of-the-Year. “It’s a special situation where we get to work with one of our local tennis clubs and connect with fans in the local tennis community.

“Tari Ann Toro and her staff are very generous to allow us to host this event and it’s a pleasure to play at one of the best public tennis facilities in North Carolina. We always get a great turnout when we play at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center and we’re looking forward to a great event.”

Play begins at 9:30 a.m. each day and the Seahawks will be competing against players from East Carolina, Liberty, New Mexico, UT-Chattanooga, North Carolina Central and VCU. Three of the teams – VCU (#30), UNCW (#43) and New Mexico (#72) – finished last year ranked in the top-75 by the ITA.

The tourney’s format features two doubles brackets and four singles draws. The doubles finals will be held Sunday morning, with the singles championships to follow.

UNCW’s Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, ranked 33rd in the 2013 final poll, are the No. 1 seed in the A Doubles bracket and ECU’s Frederic Lehfelt and Damien Brenard are set as the top seeds in the B Doubles draw.

In singles, the top seeds are Aita (A Singles), UNCW’s Zach Hublitz (B Singles), Liberty’s Sergio Mourelo (C Singles) and UTC’s Derrick Brown (D Singles). Aita wound up ranked No. 52 last year and earned a berth in the NCAA Singles Championship in Champaign-Urbana, Ill.

There is no admission at the 19-court facility and plenty of parking is available.
