Spot Festival queen, princess crowned

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) -- There is a new queen in town, and a new princess, too.

Three young women and three girls competed for crowns in the 2013 Miss North Carolina Spot Festival Pageant at Topsail High School this weekend. WWAY's own Good Morning Carolina Anchor Ashley Jacobs hosted the event.

Organizers say the 50th anniversary of the Spot Festival is the perfect time to bring the pageant back after its three year hiatus.

Parents say these pageants teach kids life skills at a young age.

"Her first pageant interview that she has ever been in by herself was at 4 years old," said one parent. "At 4 years old she was able to handle and she actually aced with perfect scores. So, pageants do actually teach more life skills than people think."

Samantha Romero won a $2,500 scholarship for being named Queen, while Savannah Shirley got a $500 savings bond for earning the princess crown.
