WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Schools Policy Committee is taking a look at several policies concerning personal relationships.

The committee wants to prohibit personal relationships between school employees in a supervisory-subordinate relationship.

School Board Vice Chair Jeannette Nichols says the district has a large number of employees and the purpose of altering these policies is to make it clear to employees what is acceptable.

“People have started dating, seeing each other, developing friends,” Nichols said. “We just wanted to make sure that they were not in a capacity of being evaluated by that particular person. So we are just looking at all areas to ensure we have something in place that everyone understands and follows.”

The committee is considering changes to the district’s nepotism policy and Code of Ethics and Standard of Conduct. It’s also looking at creating a fraternization policy.

The committee plans to continue its discussion next month.
