WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington City Council had a full docket at their Tuesday meeting, but instead of talking dollars and cents the biggest announcement was about the health of a councilwoman.

Padgett recently underwent a pancreas transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital in an attempt to help battle her Type 1 Diabetes.

She was notified about the availability of the transplant just 36 hours after being put on the transplant list.

Padgett says it’s been three weeks since she had the transplant and she already feels better than she has in the past 42 years she has been battling the disease.

“It’s not that I didn’t know they were considering me but this happened almost instantaneously it seemed like,” said Laura Padgett. “I have to say that only god could have brought all of these stars together and made this happen the way he did.”

Padgett says individual pancreas transplants are rare so she hopes doctors can use her surgery to help others in the future.
