WHA to pay Krause more than $42,000

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fired Wilmington Housing Authority CEO Michael Krause will get more than $42,000 to go away.

The WHA Board says Krause’s contract requires a final payment to Krause in the amount of $42,163.03. The board says it includes three months salary of $35,500, final pay of accrued sick leave totaling $2,184.60 and accrued vacation pay in the amount of $4,478.43.

Krause was fired without cause after Wilmington Police arrested him for DWI Sept. 8 after a concerned driver called 911 about a SUV driving erratically on Oleander Drive. Records show Krause’s blood alcohol measured as high as .35, which is more than four times the legal limit, on breath tests.

Krause pleaded guilty to DWI in Wilmington in 2009. Court records from Ohio show he was found guilty of DWI there in 2000 on a charge amended to “2nd offense.”

The WHA Board has called a special session of the Executive Committee for Friday at 8 a.m. to discuss the search process for a new CEO.

They shouldn’t give that old drunky a nickel, they should lock his drunky butt up and throw away the key, but now that they gave him all that money he’ll lay up and suck down busch ice’s all day and prolly run someone over again, he needs to go back where the came from!

His payoff is more than ALOT of employees of the Wilmington Housing Authority make annually. The ones who have families to take care of and now with the 10 furlough days employee’s must take too we are really struggling.

This is not right. That being said alcoholism is a horrible way to live. I know, I have had 2 family members that are fighting these demons. The money is spent so we might as well get over it. I personally hope this man or lack thereof finds relief through the 12 steps. One of my family members is 20 months clean and sober and is walking with his head high and his shoulders square. It is a long road and the most important step is the first one.

A WHA worker was fired because she tried to speak up against the assistant director boldly lying on a new applicant to get her application terminated and voucher taken. This may seem like a good thing BUT bullying and lying on anyone is not ht way to go whether you agree with the program or not. The employee got fired because of the way the applicant was lied on, yes they bully their employees big time they are gang members, in a way.

Hate to break it to you but no one is “elected” to this oversight board.
All are appointed by the mayor. They serve 5 year terms and no one holding a city position is allowed to serve on the board. These are un-paid positions.

Dontcha think that “cause” has been perfectly proven by Krause’ DWI history here in NC and his somewhat extensive record in Ohio? Seems that the “WHA board” is looking for a quiet exit and payout of taxpayer monies so they don’t appear as total IDIOTS for hiring him in the first place without validating his criminal record? Background checks are a pre-requisite for a basic clerk position at a simple gas station for Christ’s sake! For the CEO, the ultimate manager of the most blatant waste of taxpayer money…Nahhh, not for him
Government…the tax-paying citizens best friend! They smile and pat you on the back while looking for a soft spot to stick the knife. Sound familiar?

Why should they have to pay him to go away when he must face the consquiense of his actions. If he is big enough to drink then he is big enough to face the end result.

Good law-abiding citizens are struggling not able to pay bills, buy gas or food even and this jerk is getting this outrageous amount of money because he broke the law and got fired! I sure wish I could get over $42000 for drinking and driving!

I am really at a loss as to why we are paying him anything to leave when he broke the law not once but several times. Taxpayers are giving this jerk 42K dollars for putting our lives in jeopardy by his irresponsible behavior. Furthermore, I still don’t understand why a man with a DWI has a 500 dollar car allowance to begin with. He should not be driving and if it was to pay a driver than it should come out of his salary not added to it!! He should not even have had the job because of his prior arrests. It is clear he is unfit to work in a public office when he handles his personal life in such a chaotic manner. As a taxpayer I am pissed off that he gets any pay to leave. I am working my *&^ off to pay my taxes and see where it goes. Why work?

Its called an employment contract. One day when you get a big boy or a big girl job you might understand the situation a little better. I personally think they should have waited until he was convicted.

$42K!!!!! Krause can stay drunk for a while on that. If he can keep his blood alcohol below .20 he could stretch it out even longer.

I’ve had corporate jobs. Every one of my contracts had “Morals” clauses that addressed situations like this…Generally though, they needed commission of a felony for the company to keep the money.

…AFTER he was released “without cause”. So 2 very serious drunk driving incidents plus even more out of state convictions don’t lend to the fact that Krause is unable to meet due diligence of his CEO position when he can’t even manage his OWN drinking and driving habits? What are you smoking?

You politicians do nothing but kiss each others hind-quarters and hide behind closed doors with jibber-jabber, convincing yourselves you actually DO something. This is taxpayer money no less than pissed away in a ditch. However, it’s no different than what you do with the rest of OUR money!

You are all pitiful excuses for board members. You didn’t even have the decent common sense to perform a background check on this problematic drunk that is performed on 7-11 clerks. We may need to have the remainder of you investigated! Idiocracy at it’s very best!

WWAY has done a fine job scratching the surface of a story but it was mentioned several times that Krause was already “on leave”. FOR WHAT??? Did the Board ask him to take a few days off to write a resignation letter? Could they have been unhappy with his failure to submit a viable application for the Hillcrest Revitalization Project?? Why did the person in charge of this multi-million dollar project quit and apparently take his work products with him? I don’t for one minute believe that the WHA, which is but an extension of Wilmington’s “good ol’ boy’s club” didn’t conduct a background check! They probably know more about Krause than he knows about himself, just in case they needed to get rid of him. This is just a variation of the Brian Berger set up that is being carried out by the commissioners. It seems to me that the news could look a little deeper. I also think that since WHA has so many $$$ to use, they might consider giving all employees and the residents a bonus for putting up with some of the worst workplace bullying I have ever seen. If they really care about us they will make sure that our next CEO has a few redeeming qualities!!!!!
