WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Sometimes you have to break the mold to make a lasting impact. And that’s exactly what WWAY’s Teacher of the Week Vicki Lapp is doing.
The second grade teacher rarely utters the word class, instead she uses the word “team.” She explained, “For second graders, high school students team is the key; it builds a relationship. It is what we need in our country so that we can continue on in our community and work together.”
Mrs. Lapp teaches as Ogden Elementary. She has the smallest classroom in the building and utilizes every inch, even hanging posters on the blinds. But it is that teamwork mentality that really makes the room functional.
“We promote being a team and a community and work together for what we need. We make a list of the things we need to be successful in here and work together to make that happen.”
She was brought to tears at news of her nomination: it wasn’t the the $400 gift card to Teacher’s Aid or the stack of of coupons for free Happy Meals for her students. It was the kind words of a parent who nominated her.
“I’m very touched by that. And humbled. It means a lot to me that someone whom I have taught and parents of children I have taught feel that I’m worthy of that…it means a lot to me and I will always treasure it.”
