TAMPA, FL (AP) - The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched quarterback Josh Freeman and replaced him with rookie Mike Glennon.

The move Wednesday came two days after coach Greg Schiano insisted Freeman remained the starter because he gave the team the best chance to win.

The winless Bucs have lost their first three games, two on field goals in the closing seconds. Freeman has completed just 45.7 percent of his passes for 571 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Glennon was drafted in the third round out of North Carolina State, where he spent part of his college career as a backup to Russell Wilson. He will make his first pro start Sunday at home against Arizona.

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) - North Carolina was counting on a record-setting offense to pick up where it left off in Larry Fedora's first year. Instead, the Tar Heels just aren't putting up big numbers through the first month of the season.

The Tar Heels (1-2) have failed to reach 400 yards - an every-week occurrence in 2012 - in two of three games. They lost those games at South Carolina and Georgia Tech, scoring a total of 30 points.

Fedora says "we're still just not gelling as an offense yet." The team is playing with an offensive line that lost three players as well as tailback Gio Bernard to the NFL draft.

The Tar Heels, who play East Carolina this weekend, averaged nearly 41 points and 486 yards last year to set school records.

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees failed to make the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years, getting mathematically eliminated Wednesday night while they were losing to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Hobbled by age and injury, the Yankees (82-76) were trailing 7-3 in the eighth inning when they were knocked out as the Cleveland Indians completed a 7-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. There was no reaction from the Yankee Stadium crowd when the Indians result was posted on the scoreboard.

Despite baseball's highest opening-day payroll at $230 million, the Yankees failed to claim one of the 10 playoff berths.

Since starting the latest run of success in 1995, New York had missed the playoffs only in 2008 - when the team bid goodbye to old Yankee Stadium. This time, the Yankees are saying goodbye to Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte, who are retiring when the season ends Sunday.

RALEIGH, NC (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes could have an easier time filling their arena this season - and a tougher time getting back to the playoffs.

The NHL's realignment meant the end of the Southeast Division and placed the Hurricanes into the new Metropolitan Division.

A division packed with some of the league's most popular teams - Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, both New York teams, New Jersey and Washington - might lead to bigger crowds.

But it also figures to make ending their irksome postseason drought a much bigger challenge.

Defenseman Justin Faulk says the Hurricanes are "pretty confident with the group that we have" and believe they can claim their first postseason berth since 2009.
