CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – A man who prosecutors say falsified emissions inspections has been sentenced to one year in federal prison.

The Charlotte Observer reported (http://bit.ly/1fqCarx) that Jose Manuel Cabrera must also pay a $10,000 fine, perform 100 hours of community service and serve three years of probation.

Prosecutors say Cabrera worked at Carolina Tire in Pineville in 2011 and 2012 where he conducted 164 illegal vehicle inspections.

Prosecutors say he entered information for one car but had the testing equipment hooked up to another car. He charged $60.

The store has been banned from doing inspections for 10 years.

The case was handled by federal prosecutors because the U.S. Clean Air Act requires that cars in 48 North Carolina counties be inspected to ensure they do not exceed air quality standards.
