TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) -- Two people are dead in Columbus County after what investigators say was a murder-suicide.
The Columbus County Sheriff's Office says it was called to Spivey Road near Tabor City around 8:30 a.m. after the three children who live here could not make contact with their parents.
Deputies say the kids went to their grandparents' house down the street to call police when they could not get a hold of their parents, who were locked in the bedroom. Investigators say when they arrived they found the man and woman who lived in the home dead.
They do not know when the crime happened, but they say it appears Robert Edward Hewett, Jr., 45, killed 36-year-old Farrah Faith Prince.
Kyle Muyellis, a family friend, said he found out what happened to his friend Jesse's mother after his sister texted him.
"Jesse was in the shower this morning getting ready for school, and Nicholas and Zach, his younger brothers, were outside waiting for the school bus," Muyellis said. "Jesse heard a gunshot, and he ran out, and the man had killed his mother and shot himself."
The Sheriff's Office says Hewett died of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound and Prince died of stab wounds.
