FIT MINUTE: TRX is a unique and fun workout

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's an exercise developed out of necessity that's showing up in more and more gyms. And, TRX is unlike anything you've ever tried before.

When Kathryn Ipsen took a TRX class at the Wilmington YMCA for the first time, she admits it was 'a bit nerve-wracking.' But, after she got through her first hour of TRX, she said she couldn't wait to take another class. Then, after doing four classes, Ipsen said she's glad she got over her nerves.

"I think it's the best abs stuff I've ever done. I could really feel the abs the next day and the day after. But, it wasn't a bad pain. It was good. You felt like you'd used them," Ipsen said.

Instructor Lori Campbell said during TRX, you use your body weight and the straps to work out all of your muscles.

"It was designed by Navy SEALs. They needed it to stay in shape while they were out on missions and they had limited space and limited supplies that they could use. So, they developed it out of parachute material and different tools that they had through they're work," Campbell said.

When you hear the term Navy SEALs, it's no wonder exercisers like Ipsen are intimidated at first.

"It's kind of overwhelming and they look at it and think I'm not good enough for that. The truth and reality of it is anybody can do it," Campbell said.

That's because, Campbell said, it's all about angle.

"You can go at whatever level you like by adjusting the angle of your body," Campbell said.

As Ipsen's angle gets more 'acute' at every class, she's seeing 'obtuse' results.

"Yeah, it does tone. I think a lot quicker than other exercises because you are so much more conscious of every muscle you're using," Ipsen said.

"It just gets so many more muscle groups because you have so much more balance involved and so much more core," Campbell said.

All reasons Ipsen and many others now come to TRX class with lots of confidence.

"Everybody loves it," Campbell said.
