WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Coastal Land Trust presented the City of Wilmington with $1,700 to restore and replace rare carnivorous plants stolen from Alderman Park.

Today students from the CFCC landscaping class planted 400 of the meat eaters in the Stanley Rehder Garden.

CFCC lab instructor Dan Sheret says protecting Venus flytraps in Wilmington is essential.

“Venus flytraps grow only in one place in the world, and that’s 70 kilometers around Wilmington,” Sheret said. “So if we can’t protect these, they’re gone from the world.”

Sheret says by next may the garden will have more plants than it did before poachers stole about 1,500 plants last spring.
