WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Murray Middle School 7th grade student Abby Jethro tagged along to surprise band teacher David Tyson. She nominated him for WWAY’s Teacher of the Week because, “He makes me happy and I love band and that’s the one class I look forward to,” she explained.

Armed with a giant check and gift cards to McDonald’s thanks to WWAY Teacher of the Week sponsors McDonald’s, Corning Credit Union, Scarless Vein Care and Teacher’s Aid, Jethro and GMC anchor Ashley Jacobs barged into the music room.

Mr. David Tyson was caught off guard and said, “Teacher of the week? Awesome!”

Music is about more than enjoying the rhythm and reading the notes. “Integrity is a big part of what I do,” said Tyson, “and responsibility, especially in sixth grade for kids to start taking responsibility for their actions.”

His class lessons teach children to be confident too.

“If you don’t think you’re good enough, you can stay after school and Mr. Tyson will help you and you’ll be really good,” Abby smiled.

Tyson didn’t end up teaching middle school by accident; it was all part of his plan. “I don’t want to teach high school,” he said, “I wanted to teach middle school because these kids still like their teachers and I think they need role models.”
